Roles and responsibilities
-
Language Instruction
- Developing Language Skills: EAL teachers help students improve their proficiency in English by focusing on the four core language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. They may use a variety of resources to teach grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
- Individualized Learning: Tailoring lessons to meet the specific needs of students, which can vary significantly depending on their level of proficiency in English. This includes developing differentiated lesson plans to cater to beginners, intermediate, and advanced learners.
- Language Practice: Creating opportunities for students to practice English in both structured settings (such as classroom exercises) and informal settings (such as group discussions or interactive activities).
-
Assessment and Evaluation
- Language Assessments: Conducting assessments to evaluate students’ proficiency in English. These assessments help determine students' language needs and guide the development of individual learning plans.
- Tracking Progress: Monitoring students’ improvement in language skills and adjusting teaching methods and resources as needed to ensure continued progress. Regular feedback helps students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Report Writing: Writing reports and providing feedback to parents, caregivers, and other educators on the student’s language development and academic progress.
-
Classroom Management
- Creating a Supportive Environment: Creating a welcoming and supportive classroom environment where students feel comfortable practicing their English and taking risks with the language. This includes fostering a culture of respect and inclusivity.
- Managing Mixed Abilities: EAL classrooms often have students with varying levels of English proficiency. The teacher must manage a class where students may have diverse needs and backgrounds.
- Collaborating with Mainstream Teachers: Collaborating with subject teachers to integrate language support into various subjects, ensuring EAL students can fully participate in other subjects like math, science, and social studies.
-
Cultural Sensitivity and Awareness
- Respecting Cultural Diversity: EAL teachers work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. They must be sensitive to students' cultural differences, respecting and understanding the challenges they may face as newcomers to an English-speaking environment.
- Incorporating Cultural Awareness: Introducing activities that not only teach English but also help students explore their own cultural identities and learn about others. This can be particularly important in a classroom with a wide range of backgrounds.
-
Collaboration with Parents and Support Staff
- Parent Communication: Engaging with parents or caregivers to discuss their child’s progress and offer strategies for supporting language development at home. This is especially important in the case of parents who may not speak English themselves.
- Liaising with Support Services: Working with special education teachers, school counselors, and other support staff to ensure EAL students are receiving the appropriate resources and help to succeed.
