Job Description

Job Summary:
We seek a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) who will be a pivotal member of our hospital s executive team. The CNO will oversee all nursing operations and ensure that the highest standard of nursing care is delivered by our team. This role requires a seasoned nursing professional with a strong background in clinical leadership healthcare management and nursing education. The CNO will provide strategic leadership and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations while fostering a culture of professional development and continuous improvement within the nursing workforce.

Key Responsibilities

1. Basic Nursing Functions

Conduct thorough assessments of patients physical and mental health including taking vital signs and observing symptoms.

Administer medications and treatments as prescribed ensuring accuracy and monitoring for side effects.

Manage and dress wounds using sterile techniques to promote healing and prevent infection.

Support patients with basic activities such as bathing dressing etc. to enhance their independence.

Educate patients and their families about health conditions treatment plans and preventive care.

2. Theatre Nurse Functions

Preoperative Care: Assess patients readiness for surgery provide information about procedures and address any concerns or questions from patients.

Anaesthetic Phase: Assist anaesthetists by preparing necessary equipment and medications while monitoring the patients vital signs before surgery.

Surgical Phase: Prepare the operating room ensuring all instruments are sterile and ready; assist the surgical team by providing instruments and materials as needed during the procedure.

Postoperative Care: Monitor patients in recovery providing care until they are stable and assessing their readiness for discharge from the recovery area.

Maintain a sterile environment throughout all phases of surgery to prevent infections and ensure patient safety.

3. Leadership and Strategy

Provide clinical leadership to the nursing team ensuring the delivery of highquality patient care.

Develop and execute strategic plans for the nursing department that align with the hospital s mission and goals.

Offer visionary leadership to nursing staff ensuring compassionate safe and highquality patient care.

Coordinate and manage the nursing team including scheduling mentoring and guiding optimal performance.

Foster a collaborative work environment that encourages professional growth and development.

4. Clinical Oversight

Ensure compliance with Nigerian healthcare regulations and international standards in nursing practices.

Develop and oversee the implementation of clinical policies procedures and protocols to enhance patient safety and care quality.

Oversee patient care activities ensuring adherence to care plans and effective communication with patients.

Act as an advocate for patients addressing concerns and maintaining a patientfocused approach in all aspects of care delivery.

Collaborate with medical and administrative teams to improve patient outcomes and healthcare delivery.


5. Staff Management and Development

Recruit train and mentor nursing staff promoting a culture of continuous learning.

Develop effective staffing models and schedules to ensure optimal patient care.

Facilitate training programs for nursing staff ensuring continuous professional development.

Establish a healthy working environment that supports staff wellbeing.

Ensure nurse roster and call schedule adhere to hospital guidelines and are costeffective.


6. Quality Assurance and Improvement

Conduct performance evaluations for nursing staff providing constructive feedback and recognizing achievements.

Lead quality improvement initiatives within the nursing department using datadriven practices.


7. Budget and Resource Management

Develop and manage the nursing department s budget ensuring efficient use of resources.

Oversee procurement and maintenance of nursing supplies equipment and technology.

Collaborate with other departments to optimize resource allocation.


8. Collaboration and Communication

Serve as a liaison between nursing staff and hospital administration advocating for the needs of the nursing department.

Work closely with other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care effectively.

Establish relationships with external stakeholders including regulatory bodies and educational institutions.


9. Education and Training

Collaborate with the practice manager Medical Director and other department heads to identify training needs and develop impactful education and training programs for nurses.

Work with HR to create mandatory courses appraisals and monitor and regulate the training and development of all staff.

Requirements

Job Specifications

Educational Qualifications

Bachelor s degree in Nursing (BNSC) required.

Must hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

A master s degree in Nursing Healthcare Administration or a related field is highly preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years of nursing experience. At least 5 years in a senior leadership role within a hospital or healthcare setting in Nigeria.
