Job Description

Job Title: Research Associate in Supramolecular Chemistry

Job Location: Manchester UK

Job Location Type: Hybrid

Job Contract Type: Fulltime

Job Seniority Level: MidSenior level

‘Development of Novel MetalOrganic Cages for Applications in Sensing and Catalysis’

A position is available for a Postdoctoral Research Associate with experience in organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. The position will commence on or as soon as possible after the 10th March 2025. The successful candidate will support established projects working towards the development of catalytic metalorganic cages as well as cages developed for binding and recognition of biological substrates. The candidate is expected to be highly independent and will be tasked with the daytoday management of the Riddell research group as well as providing supervision and guidance to PhD students currently working in the lab. This is an excellent opportunity for a highly ambitious researcher looking for the opportunity to demonstrate their potential to run an academic research group.

Metalorganic cages have to date found diverse applications ranging from gas binding to chemical separation and drug delivery. Many limitations persist for cages reported in the literature however including the limited internal cavity dimensions cage solubility and stability. Additionally the lack of utilisation of the metal ions beyond their structural capacity remains an untapped opportunity for this class of complexes. In recent years the Riddell group has focussed on the development of (i) watersoluble capsules with cavities larger than those typically found in the literature (ii) the formation of lower symmetry cages with asymmetric binding pockets and (iii) the application of these novel constructs particularly to biological problems and as novel catalysts. This appointment will involve supporting and developing organic and selfassembly synthesis strategies to diversify metalorganic cages enabling further expansion of their application scope. Where novel cages are identified a range of characterisation techniques will be employed including NMR spectroscopy (1D 2D and heteronuclear) mass spectrometry and single crystal Xray diffraction. Experience in each of these techniques with regard to supramolecular complex characterisation is highly desirable. If time allows development of the complexes towards targeted applications may also be carried out either in the lab or working together with appropriately chosen collaborators.

Applicants should have or expect to attain a PhD or equivalent in Chemistry and have submitted their thesis prior to taking up the position. In particular we seek applications from researchers experienced in organic synthesis and metalorganic supramolecular selfassembly and characterisation. The candidate should also have a proven record of supporting junior researchers working in a collaborative manner and excellent communication and organisational skills.
