R&D Digital & Tech strive to deliver products and services that meet the needs of our R&D partners whilst being intuitive efficient effective and satisfying to use. Across Scientific Digital & Tech there will be design squads led by design managers with experience driving user experience improvements across a product portfolio through the planning and execution of usercentred analysis and design practices. They will help deliver better user experiences and business processes within our application portfolio identifying opportunities to improve systems and processes whilst advocating a usercentred focus within Agile ways of working.
We require an experienced Design Director to direct and coordinate an aligned approach to user experience the design manager community. The proposed laboratory design manager role is the fulcrum of where design interfaces meet across Scientific Digital & Tech. This role is accountable for aligned design approaches across each of the four teams of design manager and designer in Scientific Digital and Tech. They will lead Scientific Data & Technology in a centralized customer experience focus to drive users endtoend portfolio experience across products. This role would additionally serve as the Manager for the Laboratory Digital & Tech Design squad.

This leadership role will partner closely with other design managers and design leaders across
Digital & Tech to continue to cultivate new talent and to also unlock new value opportunities to impact the discovery and development of new medicines and vaccines. This leadership role will also be a leader of leaders who will support each Scientific Digital & Tech design manager to further develop team capabilities in design delivery.
Providing design leadership to products across the Scientific Digital & Tech product families and for the Laboratory domain and helping manage demand through a confident and holistic understanding of the needs goals and expectations of users across the domain.
Owning the Design Strategy for the Scientific Digital & Tech organisation and for the
Laboratory domain taking accountability of the quality of design for solutions delivered and overseeing the design decisions of products within the portfolio.
Defining prioritising and optimising the delivery of business value across the product
portfolio through the application of Design Thinking practices business partnering process improvement user research and usercentred design.
Performing user research through qualitative enquiry quantitative data analysis and user testing within the R&D customer base of the laboratory product family area and coaching other domains.
Driving an holistic understanding of user journeys across the Scientific Digital & Tech
product portfolio continuously looking for opportunities to streamline business processes and using this holistic context to better define business value of investments.
Obtaining and propagating a solid understanding of the business domain and processes within a product family area capturing user goals needs and expectations and translating these into personas journeys and user stories that support strategic improvements and improve value propositions.
Utilising the R&D Tech UX & Design Team for the planning and executing of UX
engagements and activities through the use of user researchers UX designers and UI
designers and helping drive crossproduct standards that support the maturity of UX and Design across R&D Tech specifically working with other UX practitioners and sharing experiences
Working directly with the Product Director and Engineering Manager to help articulate value propositions prioritise investments and realise the return on these investments through meeting the true needs of end users.
Working closely with Senior Product Directors Product Owners and other product team members to ensure product teams are incorporating Design Thinking practices into their Agile processes.
Keeping up with internal and external trends across scientific areas impacting Scientific personas including office based staff lab scientists and pilot plant operators including hybrid working mobile wearables and social media.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science Engineering Biological Sciences or similar
discipline
5 years of software design experience
Pharmaceutical and/or Healthcare industry experience
Preferred Qualifications:
10 years of leadership in driving technology and usability
Minimum of 10 years of experience working in life sciences technology environment
preference in Scientific technology.
Experience working in a global Tech/IT or pharmaceutical research organization to give an appreciation of the complexities of users working with multiple applications
Working knowledge of the scientific process of experimental design and execution
Track record in successful technology strategy development programme and product
delivery service and vendor management
Track record in delivering business impact through user experience enhanced technology
Experience and proven track record of working as part of agile product development teams Excellent communication skills and ability to work within a multinational / multicultural environment
Experience working in a matrix environment with input from life scientists and technologists
Experience communicating with partners and stakeholders across all levels of
organisations
