About the position
The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT is seeking a highly motivated PostDoctoral Fellow Agroclimatic and Crop Modeling with research experience in climatesmart agriculture and climate information services and a deep understanding of agricultural practices for climate change adaptation and resilience in African agriculture and food systems. The PostDoctoral Fellow will support the Climate Action lever of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT in West and Central Africa and contribute to fundraising on a need basis.
Key duties & responsibilities
- Contribute to the implementation of crop and climate modeling techniques aimed at monitoring and forecasting agroclimatic conditions and climate risk assessment.
- Advance research and application of agroclimatic information enhancing farm management practices through climatesmart agriculture
- Contribute to the development of data infrastructure and visualization tools integrating agroclimatic and socio environmental dimensions climate impact and climate risk analysis
- Develop and deliver capacity strengthening to African institutions and policy makers. This includes developing training materials leading training events and evaluating the effectiveness of capacity strengthening activities
- Present work and results in a clear and concise way to a wide variety of stakeholders
- Publish findings in peerreviewed journals contributing to the academic discourse on climate change research in Africa
- Contribute to project management and proposal developments and collaboration with partner organizations
- Contribute to any other duties and tasks as assigned.
Requirements
Required qualifications and experience.
- PhD in Agrometeorology Agroclimatology Agronomy Environmental Science Crop Science Climate Change Farming System Analysis or related fields with expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the application of digital technologies in agriculture.
- Experience and demonstrated proficiency in climate data analysis and crop/agronomic modeling using programming languages such as R and/or Python and knowledge of data visualization tools.
- Experience in managing and processing gridded or large datasets relevant to spatial modeling such as weather climate remote sensing and soil data.
- Knowledge of climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies including but not limited to: climatesmart agriculture climate change risk assessment and disaster risk reduction.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of climate information systems.
- Proven record of academic writing (e.g. peer reviewed publications).
- Experience in systematic literature reviews and knowledge synthesis methods and tools would be an advantage.
- Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills and ability to develop and apply innovative research approaches.
- Experience in multidisciplinary research and/or development projects related to climate change adaptation and mitigation in African agriculture and food systems.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Be proactive and reliable with experience in managing a variety of tasks.
- Excellent oral and written commands of both English and French.
- Ability to work well under pressure and with short deadlines.
- Willing to travel and enjoy working in a multicultural environment
Terms of employment
This is an internationally recruited position which will be based in Dakar Senegal. The initial contract will be for 2 years subject to a probation period of six months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources. This position is graded at BG08 level with a minimum basic salary of USD44248 per annum in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy).
