JOB SUMMARY:
Performs General and vascular ultrasound procedures. Utilizes ultrasound equipment producing high frequency sound waves to create diagnostic images of the human body for use in diagnosis of disease or organ malfunctions. Works independently and takes direction from radiologists and physicians. The Ultrasonographer reports to the Medical Imaging Manager.
JOB SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE
* Instruct patients regarding procedures to ensure cooperation and optimum test results.
* Transports patients to and from each procedure.
* Knowledge of crosssectional anatomy and physiology to sufficiently pinpoint area of imaging.
* Perform ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians.
* Selects transducer and makes equipment adjustments according to nature of test depth of field and other specifications of the test.
* Conducts actual test procedure; moves transducer by hand over specified area of body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasound image produced.
* Enters required patient information into computer to become part of test record.
* Ensures confidentiality of patient records.
* Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings.
* Proficient in taking vital signs.
* Observes patient and equipment during procedures to assure patient and technologist safety and report any problems to the Medical Imaging Manager immediately.
* Clean and disinfect room/equipment after each procedure.
* Performs such preventive maintenance quality control and calibrations as required or outlined in the manufacturers recommendation.
* Maintain ultrasound and vascular lab equipment in appropriate operating condition.
* Recognizes analyzes and takes immediate corrective action to resolve instrument issues.
* Order and stock all ultrasound and vascular lab supplies.
* Assists Radiologist or physicians with special procedures (i.e. cyst aspirations biopsy thoracentesis paracentesis and amniocentesis) following sterile techniques.
* Assists other Radiology personnel whenever possible.
* Maintain accurate department records reports and files as directed.
* Follow prescribed safety standards in operating equipment.
* Understands the use of personal protective equipment and wears them in accordance with safety rules.
* Demonstrates understanding of safety equipment needed to perform the job; radiation film badges lead aprons thyroid shields and gloves plus personal protective equipment (eye protection masks shoe covers gowns gloves etc.) and uses them as needed for selfprotection.
* Meets dress code requirements; clean comfortable clothing no sweats spandex or blue jeans. No strong personal fragrances.
* Wears appropriate identification.
* Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements for Ultrasonography.
* Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the mission purposes policy procedures and standards of the hospital.
* Maintains compliance with Medical Imaging and facility policies/procedures as well as safety practices.
* Keeps up to date with best practices and new developments.
* Proficient in use of electronic applications.
TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT
* Completes facility education requirements within assigned time frame
* Specifies personnel accountabilities and regularly evaluates performance
* Attends facility and departmental meetings as assigned.
PLANNING AND ORGANIZATION
* Able to prioritize work. Ensures deadlines are met.
* Coordinates work schedule with Departmental Manager and/or scheduling desk to assure workload coverage.
* Organizes daily work schedule and performs related clerical duties as required.
* Coordinates daily exams and/or procedures for patients of all ages.

* Follows Chain of Command for issue resolution.
* Works with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve electronic applications issues.
* Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
* Must have the ability to make effective decisions by assessing and evaluating a variety of information.

* Complete facility variances and reports issues identified.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

* Directing visitors to appropriate hospital areas.
* Shares responsibility for keeping unit neat clean and organized.
* Occasional clerical duties as needed.
EDUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
* Graduate of an accredited Radiology Technology program required.
* Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology program required.
* Certification/Licensure:
o RDMS certification in one or more of the following areas: Abdomen OB/GYN vascular echo.
* Basic Life Support certification for Health Care Providers.
* Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate
* Ability to follow established departmental procedures.
* Experience with Radiology Information Systems PACS and electronic medical records.
* Strong computer skills.
COGNITIVE/BEHAVIORAL REQUIREMENTS:
Time/deadline/shift/overtime requirements:
Must be flexible and available to work differing shifts and weekends.
OPERATION OF EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:
Ability to operate equipment necessary to complete Medical Imaging procedures.
Bottom line requirements:
1. Graduate of an accredited Radiology Technology program.
2. Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Ultrasound Technology program.
3. Echo experience.
4. RDMS certification in one or more of the following areas: Abdomen OB/GYN Vascular Echo.
