As Data Scientist at Positium you will work at the intersection of data science and mobile positioning analysing large datasets to uncover valuable insights into population movements mobility patterns and tourism trends. You will join a talented team of developers and data scientists creating advanced statistical models and contributing to the continuous evolution of our data processing methodologies. Together we aim to deliver impactful datadriven solutions that address the needs of our clients across various industries.
Tasks
- Analyse large datasets from mobile positioning data sources to derive insights related to population mobility and tourism.
- Develop and implement statistical models and algorithms (may include machine learning) to identify trends and patterns within the data.
- Work on methodological advancements to improve data analysis techniques and ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to design datadriven solutions that address client needs and enhance our offerings.
- Create compelling visualizations and reports to communicate findings to stakeholders.
- Stay uptodate with industry trends and advancements in data science and mobile analytics and be ready to share knowledge with colleagues.
Requirements
- BSc/MSc in Computer Science or MSc in Data Science.
- At least two years of experience as a Data Scientist or similar.
- Proficiency in programming: working proficiency in Python SQL and experience with R is a plus. Familiarity with JavaScript for data visualisation is also beneficial.
- Familiarity with main data science libraries: Pandas Scikitlearn Numpy
- Statistical and data science knowledge: strong understanding of statistical concepts (e.g. probability distributions Bayesian statistics) and general data science methodologies. Ability to select performance metrics aligned with business goals and design validation strategies in scenarios with limited ground truth data.
- Databases: working experience with relational databases (preferably PostgreSQL)
- Data visualisation skills: experience in visualising aggregated and geospatial data using Python R or JavaScript.
- Machine learning expertise: familiarity with supervised learning methods (e.g. decision trees XGBoost) and unsupervised learning techniques (e.g. KMeans DBSCAN). Industrylevel experience with machine learning particularly involving geospatial data is a plus.
- Software development practices: familiarity with objectoriented programming (OOP) design patterns clean code practices. Experience using Git for version control and collaboration on platforms like GitHub and GitLab including code reviews and refactoring.
- Unix/Linux and scripting: proficiency with Unix/Linux commandline shell scripting (e.g. bash).
- Cloud platforms: familiarity with at least some major cloud providers and services (AWS Azure Google Cloud Platform).
- Containerisation and orchestration: experience with Docker.
- Being a team player with great communication skills.
- Good speaking and writing skills in English.
- We expect the candidate to be located in Estonia and have a right to work here.
Additional experience that would be beneficial:
- Geospatial database extensions: familiarity with spatial extensions for relational databases (e.g. PostGIS Oracle Spatial DuckDB Spatial)
- Python geospatial libraries: familiarity with Python libraries for geospatial analysis such as GeoPandas and Shapely.
- Big geospatial data frameworks: familiarity with Apache Sedona.
- Geospatial data formats: experience handling various geospatial data formats including GeoParquet GeoJSON Shapefiles and raster data formats.
- Understanding of spatial concepts: knowledge of spatial reference systems coordinate transformations and familiarity with spatial analysis and GIS theory.
