ABOUT YOUR ROLE

Descartes Underwriting is seeking a Senior R&D Data Scientist to join our R&D Team.
At the core of our companys strategy your missions will focus on making directcontributions to the development of new climate models.
You will report directly to the R&D Manager on Natural Risks.

Your responsibilities would include :

Individual contribution in R&D

• Conduct research on the modeling of climate risks and machine learningmethods;
• Identify new and innovative ideas and testing stateoftheart methodsbased on recent research articles;
• Collaborate with the underwriting and business teams to ensure our productsare efficiently integrated into the underwriting process and meet our clientsneeds;
• Propose models developments or features that are technically andeconomically aligned with companys strategy;
• Take part and help in new products/existing models translating andcombining multiple research ideas and solutions into a new product ormodule.

Technical Leadership

• Lead the improvement and/or development of new models to enhance andstrengthen our understanding of climate risks;
• Be a referent for junior R&D Data Scientists and provide them guidance ontechnical modeling matters;
• Give relevant technical advice to Underwriting for their daily underwritingactivities and Innovation teams during the product development phase;
• Suggest improvements in software or infrastructure challenges.

ABOUT YOU

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

• Scientific academic background with ideally a Researchoriented MastersDegree or PhD in Meteorological studies Physics or Applied Mathematics.
• From 5 to 10 years of experience in R&D (PhD included);
• Strong skills in Statistics Applied mathematics Physics and Machine Learningmethods;
• Proven track record of significant individual contributor roles for solvingcomplex problems and of contribution and leading the design anddevelopment of parts of a model;
• Ideally a previous experience in climate modeling or data science;
• Proficiency in Python.

SKILLS

• Fluency in English (written and verbal communication) is required;
• Good command of one additional language (e.g. Chinese French ItalianGerman Spanish...) is valued.

• Interested in weather and natural perils modeling (cyclones wildfires hailtsunamis earthquakes etc);
• Strong team spirit and ability to work under pressure;
