Job Description

The Environmental and Safety (EHS) Specialist will be responsible for administrating and coordinating all of the plant safety and training programs including policies, legal requirements; organize and maintain all required documentation, investigate safety/environmental incidents, uphold and promote safe work rules, procedures and practices throughout the facility; champion continual improvement activities; ensures compliance with environmental and government safety regulations and industry standards and addresses any unsafe acts and conditions as required. Responsibilities also include management of the environmental management system for ISO-14001:2015 program.

Position Duties:

  • Achieve safety vision through management commitment and teammate involvement and ownership; Enforces safety standards and processes
  • Improve on and assist in developing and maintaining a safety training program and related environmental information and communication, including an annual training schedule, for all regulatory and plant specific training; Ensure training is conducted as needed, including safety orientation for new hires, transferred teammates, contractors and temporary staff; Ensure all supervisory personnel are trained in safety procedures
  • Understand local, state and federal occupational health, environmental and safety regulations and monitors regulatory changes as they occur
  • Ensure the development, implementation and updating of required written safety and health programs and plans under the general OSHA standard
  • Responsible for leading the investigation of all accidents; compile and submit incident reports as required by company reporting requirements; ensure effective incident follow-up investigations, including post-incident re-training. Investigates incident or near-misses and lead root cause analysis
  • Conduct investigations into teammate safety inquires, suggestions and complaints
  • Create, educate and assure compliance with facility Occupational Health and Safety Policy
  • Creates, maintains, and improves policies and systems related to teammate welfare and safety designed to create a culture of continuous improvement
  • Performs regular patrols, inspections, evaluations, and/or walkthrough of facilities and/or properties for EHS, safety and illness prevention compliance
  • Conducts toolbox meeting and other ongoing learning opportunities for staff
  • Takes measures to drive accountability for safety throughout the organization; Drives the development of a data-driven culture that can coach around safety
  • Organize and maintain all safety and compliance related forms
  • Uses emergency authority when needed to stop unsafe behaviors
  • Develop and maintain a written inspection and auditing program for the facility (as developed through plant walkthrough inspections). Ensure that identified action items are completed and t hose actions are implemented effectively
  • Responsible for maintaining hard copy and digital current and obsolete SDS files and associated manuals
  • Lead the development of risk assessment methods/systems for anticipating, identifying and evaluating hazards
  • Monitor and maintain company safety program as directed by Japan, i.e., 3S, KYT, RA, and Safety Rules
  • Assures that appropriate persons are trained in first aid and CPR and emergency numbers, and first responder postings are updated
  • Assist management with the development of short and long-term safety and environmental management system (ISO-14001) goals including objectives, targets, strategies, auditing and record keeping; Assist in all regulatory and compliance inspections
  • Make recommendations concerning the modification, improvement, or removal of any company equipment, facilities, or machinery which are hazardous to teammate safety or health; Conducts job hazard analysis
  • Manage contractor safety program. Track contractor compliance to safety plan including but not limited to, safety submittal, training and equipment inspection and other documentation. Creates and tracks safety reviews and approves subcontractor plans and safety standards
  • Define safety-related objectives, metrics, and goals for the facility
  • Identifies leading indicators and other metrics for the organization that can be used to support safety, safe practices, and teammate engagement in general
  • Completes safety and environmental reports as required
  • An ability to perform on the job training to a new teammate
  • All other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

  • Required-bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or four to eight years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
  • Ability to communicate in writing and verbally with all levels of organization
  • Exceptional external and internal customer service skills
  • Preferred-advanced education & ability to train and certify powered industrial trucks (optional)
