The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a City Research Scientist II for a position in the Distribution Water Quality (DWQ) Division Water Quality Science and Planning Drinking Water Operations Directorate located in Queens New York. The Water Quality Science & Planning section is responsible for providing scientific and technical assistance to the Director of Water Quality to support research and reporting on current and emerging issues in the areas of regulatory compliance emerging contaminants treatment water quality technology and water supply operations.
Under direction of the Chief of Water Quality Science and Planning. the City Research Scientist II will serve as Research Scientist and will be responsible for planning and directing the technical and administrative operations of the unit. Specific duties include:
Providing scientific and technical assistance to the Chief of Water Quality Science & Planning.
Assisting the directorate bureau and agency in investigating and reporting on current and emerging issues in the areas of regulatory compliance source water protection treatment water quality and water quality operations.
Acting as liaison as requested for issues that need input from a technical water quality viewpoint including other agency groups as well as external groups.
Participating in administrative functions of the water quality research unit.

Qualifications :
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical biological and environmental sciences and public health) A masters degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and one year of fulltime experience in a responsible supervisory administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A masters degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and three years of responsible fulltime research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least a masters degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in 2 above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in 1 and 2 above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
