Job Description

Key Role:

The role will be an Assistant Consultant within the biodiversity team based in our Johannesburg office although working on projects nationally. The role will include assisting all biodiversityrelated specialisations/fields (terrestrial aquatic and wetland ecologies) although support to other environmental services such as the air quality team may also be required. 

WSP Africa also conducts projects outside of South Africa presenting travelling opportunities and access to a diverse range of biodiversity projects. From a global perspective WSP Africa collaborates closely with our Australian Canadian Middle East and UK Businesses presenting unique opportunities to our local Biodiversity team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for and undertake fieldwork inclusive of aquatics biomonitoring wetland delineation and assessment and terrestrial habitat and species assessments.
  • Collection and delivery of samples and equipment as required
  • Process and format collected fieldwork data.
  • Compile baseline biodiversity reports site sensitivity reports and assist in the compilations of impact assessment reports.
  • Compile monitoring reports (aquatics wetland and terrestrial)
  • Meet all health and safety requirements as required by WSP and clients
  • Providing assistance to the broader WSP E&E business

  • Role model standards for SHEQ performance and behaviour consistent with the companys health safety environmental and quality vision and policies by influencing those around you
  • Contributing to the identification of SHEQ risks and driving processes to achieve Zero Harm
  • Embracing displaying and promoting the company values and ensuring a safe working environment is maintained at all times

Key Competencies and Generic Skills:

  • Knowledge of the South African environmental legislation
  • Technical report writing skills including the ability to produce professional reports in fluent English
  • Computer literate inclusive of a strong understanding of the Microsoft software suite.
  • Experience in use of GIS software (ESRI QGIS or similar) advantageous.

Qualifications :

  • Minimum 3year relevant degree
  • Minimum of 2years experience in the environmental field with experience undertaking field surveys.
  • Familiarity and experience with standard aquatics terrestrial and/or wetland survey techniques would be advantageous.
  • SACNASP candidacy advantageous
  • Must be willing to become SASS5 accredited in the short term
