Job Description

The Bureau of Communications within the agencys Office of External Affairs division serves as the agencys inhouse publisher; develops public health marketing campaigns and related collateral; provides materials and services in languages for limitedEnglish proficient New Yorkers; maintains the agencys website and its social media platforms. Within Communications the Language Services unit coordinates the delivery of interpretation services including ASL and realtime captioning to inform New Yorkers of health information including that related to public health emergencies. The Unit also provides professionally translated materials to ensure that Limited English Proficient New Yorkers have equitable access to information and services that the NYC Health Department provides.

The Language Service unit has an opening for a fulltime Haitian Creole Translator/Project Manager who will be reporting to the Director of Language Services and Research and working with a team of translators and language access coordinators; as the new Haitian Creole Translator you will be supporting the Agency in its efforts to comply with Local Law 30: The Citywide Policy on Language Access to ensure the effective delivery of City Services and meaningful access to City programs and activities for all City residents who are proficient in Haitian Creole regardless of their proficiency in English.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Translating and proofreading the translation of a vast range of communication materials (such as booklets fact sheets emergency communication materials press releases social media posts and marketing campaigns) into Haitian Creole for distribution to communitybased organizations and the City at large.

Providing input on cultural and linguistic issues related to the development of communications materials for diverse New York City audiences and for the outreach to communitybased organizations other City Agencies and constituents.

Assisting/contributing to the development of inhouse resources like translation style guides and glossaries that aim to improve the effectiveness of the agencys language services across New York City neighborhoods/communities.

Performing clerical work such as review invoices submit for payments and assist the unit with special projects when not engaged in translation duties.

Improving outreach to diverse communities throughout New York City via the establishment of collaborative working relationships with communitybased organizations throughout New York City.

Managing language services projects including coordinating with the Publications Unit outside vendors and inhouse translators to deliver highquality translations for programmatic events.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
Native fluency in Haitian Creole

Excellent judgement editing writing and interpersonal skills

Ability to communicate complex messages clearly in simple language to highly diverse audiences

Strong organizational and problemsolving skills

Experience with stakeholder engagement and project management

The ideal candidate for this position must be a proactive and selfmotivated individual with the ability to work in teams and in a highly dynamic environment with multiple stakeholders and timelines.

Qualifications :

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in 1 above.
