Job Description

About the Office: The Attorney General is the states top lawyer and law enforcement official protecting and serving the people and interests of Rhode Island through a broad range of duties. Every day the Offices attorneys fight to ensure the public safety of the states communities improve the economic security of its citizens safeguard the states spectacular natural resources and restore the publics trust in government. Assistant and Special Assistant Attorneys General represent the people of Rhode Island in civil and criminal matters before trial courts appellate courts and the supreme courts of Rhode Island and the United States. The Office is unique among attorneys general offices across the country. Out of fifty states only two other offices share the same broad criminal mission. The Offices attorneys prosecute complex and violent crimes but also functionally serve as one of the nations largest district attorneys offices prosecuting all felonies throughout the state.

The Rhode Island Office of the Attorney Generals Bureau of Criminal Investigation is seeking a fulltime Cold Case Investigation Assistant contractor (CCIA).

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the reporting requirements setforth by the projects grant manager
  • Act as the RIAGs Cold Case Liaison with the RI Department of Healths Forensic Laboratory
  • Support the Project Manager of the Closure Project with data collection and reporting as needed for USDOJ grant reporting purposes
  • Promptly complete all required reports as needed following the proper procedures and policies associated with the report request
  • Receive and fulfill requests from the RIAG Cold Case Unit Team
  • Track all RIAG requests made to the RIDOH Forensic Laboratory
  • Conduct cold case file searches
  • Locate evidence at RIDOH or an offsite storage facility following the proper procedures and policies
  • Attend a weekly Cold Case Meeting at the RIAGBCI Office and other meetings as required
  • Other tasks as they relate to Cold Case Investigations

Qualifications:

  • 35 years of experience working in the Criminal Justice field or a related field
  • A college degree is required preferably in forensic science human sciences data science criminal justice law sociology physiology or related studies.
  • Critical thinking skills are required
  • Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and policies is a plus but not required training will be provided
  • Working knowledge of forensics/criminal justice systems/law is preferred
  • Excellent written communication skills and time management skills required
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft 365 including Outlook and Teams and ability to learn new software as needed
  • The ability to attend meetings offsite during the day is required therefore reliable transformation
  • The ability to work nights and weekends as needed with proper notice is required
