Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

The Pastry Kitchen Chef Commis 1 plays a vital role in the pastry department of our culinary team. This entry-level position is designed for those looking to hone their skills and gain hands-on experience in pastry preparation and production. The Commis 1 will assist in creating high-quality pastries, desserts, and baked goods while maintaining the kitchen’s standards for cleanliness and organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Preparation and Production:

    • Assist in the preparation of pastry items including cakes, pastries, breads, and desserts.
    • Follow recipes and instructions from the Pastry Chef to ensure consistency and quality.
    • Measure and mix ingredients accurately, adhering to standard portion sizes.
  2. Quality Control:

    • Ensure all products meet the quality and presentation standards of the kitchen.
    • Taste products to ensure flavor profiles are correct and report any inconsistencies to the Pastry Chef.
  3. Kitchen Maintenance:

    • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in accordance with health and safety regulations.
    • Assist in inventory management, including tracking supplies and ingredients, and ensuring all items are stored properly.
  4. Equipment Handling:

    • Operate kitchen equipment and tools safely and effectively, including mixers, ovens, and pastry tools.
    • Report any equipment malfunctions to the Pastry Chef immediately.
  5. Team Collaboration:

    • Work closely with other kitchen staff to ensure smooth operations and timely service.
    • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for menu development and improvement.
  6. Learning and Development:

    • Stay informed about new pastry techniques and trends to enhance skills and contribute to the team’s creativity.
    • Take initiative in learning new recipes and procedures, demonstrating a passion for pastry arts.

Desired candidate profile

Qualifications:

  • Culinary school diploma or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in a kitchen environment, particularly in pastry, is an advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of pastry techniques and ingredients.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for creating high-quality desserts.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks effectively.
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to learn from senior staff.

Working Conditions: The role involves standing for long periods and may require lifting heavy items. The work environment is typically hot and busy, especially during peak service hours.
