A Preview of Your Role

In this role as a Senior Accountant you will take responsibility for the completion of tax and accounting assignments including tax compliance researching tax issues for Supervisors Managers Directors and Partners as well as reviewing tax returns prepared by junior staff and preparing financial statements. You will assist Seniors and Assistant Managers with medium to large and more complex assignments applying testing and further developing your previously acquired accounting knowledge and skills.

Balancing the Books on Your Career Path

  • Complete tax and accounting assignments including tax compliance researching tax issues for supervisors and reviewing tax returns prepared by junior staff while preparing financial statements.
  • Assist Seniors and Assistant Managers with medium to large more complex assignments applying testing and further developing acquired accounting knowledge and skills.
  • Build and enhance technical skills in relevant tax areas.
  • Develop staff management and staff development skills.
  • Complete the CPA Program.

Working Relationships:

  • Report to receive guidance from and be mentored by senior staff.
  • Assist in task assignment task clarification onthejob training delegation and staff supervision.
  • Foster effective working relationships and support the productivity of the team.
  • Follow instructions from the Assistant Manager or Manager in charge.

Main Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Assist senior staff with a variety of business advisory activities applying and developing accounting knowledge and skills.
  • Complete all core tasks as outlined in Process Management Platform (PMP) process maps.
  • Prepare accounting compliance work by following standard procedures such as:
  • Gather information based on prior period and checklist.
  • Verify client software/documentation against prior financial statements.
  • Classify and enter transactions into general ledger accounts in client software (MYOB Xero Quickbooks).
  • Prepare account reconciliations as per checklist.
  • Prepare substantiating documentation (work papers).
  • Identify exceptions and raise queries with clients or team leaders.
  • Prepare and enter adjusting journal entries.
  • Prepare financial statements for companies trusts and partnerships.
  • Compile final financial statements and draft accompanying advisory letters.
  • Prepare income tax returns and associated schedules for individuals partnerships trusts and companies including:
  • Review financial statements and identify tax reconciliation items.
  • Prepare tax calculations.
  • Prepare Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT) returns.
  • Draft outforsigning letters with suggested notes to clients.
  • Complete all relevant checklists.
  • Prepare tax assessment letters and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS) and annual GST returns.
  • Maintain clear welldocumented file notes and keep senior staff informed of progress.
  • Identify potential issues and collaborate with senior staff to resolve them.
  • Research basic tax matters to respond to client queries appropriately.
  • Ensure all review points are addressed promptly.

Process Management/Administration (5% of time):

  • Complete standard administrative tasks and assist with additional tasks as instructed.
  • Routine duties include:
  • Daily timesheet completion.
  • Supporting other staff as instructed.
  • Assisting with budget and bill preparation.
  • Updating the Process Management Platform (PMP).

SelfManagement (5% of time):

  • Manage your time to complete assignments and achieve performance goals.
  • Routine duties include:
  • Managing workflow reviewing hours against budget and prioritizing tasks.
  • Clarifying job requirements and deadlines.
  • Providing updates on work progress and requesting reviews to finalize jobs.

Job Control:

  • Plan assignments determine required information estimate potential problems and monitor budgets and productivity targets.

SelfDevelopment (10% of time):

  • Strengthen and specialize working knowledge of accounting concepts.
  • Attend firmorganized training and selfeducate as necessary.
  • Ensure proficiency in relevant software applications used in the Business Services Division.
  • Attend and contribute to team meetings.
  • Develop knowledge of other service areas within the firm.

Staff Management (5% of time):

  • Perform staff management tasks as directed including task assignment and clarification.
  • Conduct initial reviews of tasks completed by the Manila team and provide feedback.
  • Monitor time spent on jobs and communicate budget issues to Assistant Manager/Manager.

Staff Development (5% of time):

  • Carry out training tasks as directed and assist with general queries.
  • Mentor and coach team members providing onthejob training for Graduates and Intermediates.
  • Assist with presenting local training sessions.

The Ledger of Your Credentials

  • Degree from a recognized university acceptable for admission to the CPA Program.
  • Currently undertaking or recently completed the CPA Program.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years of Australian accounting experience with strong technical expertise including the ability to independently prepare tax reconciliations rather than relying on counterparts workpapers.

  • Initial Staff Development Skills: Ability to provide onthejob training and present formal divisional or firmwide training.

Specialist/Technical Knowledge:

  • Ability to complete small assignments autonomously addressing most review points independently and attempting to resolve complex issues.
  • Apply newly acquired skills and knowledge autonomously in new areas of work.

IT/Software Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft packages (Excel & Word).
  • Ability to use relevant software applications (e.g. APS Tax XPA Xero MYOB) the ATO tax portal and CCH online libraries efficiently.
