You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe Fiber Technician is responsible for the installation maintenance and troubleshooting of all fiber optic networks including both customer connections and backbone infrastructure. This role involves deploying and maintaining fiber optic cables splicing testing signal quality and providing technical support for both customers and network infrastructure. The technician ensures the stability and performance of the entire fiber optic network.
Key Responsibilities:
Installation and Setup:
Install fiber optic cables connectors and Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at customer premises and network distribution points.
Deploy fiber optic cables along network backbone infrastructure ensuring proper routing and securing.
Perform fiber splicing and ensure correct termination at customer sites and core network points.
Test and verify fiber optic connections using OTDR and Power Meters to confirm network performance.
Maintenance of Fiber Links:
Perform regular maintenance on the entire fiber optic network including backbone links distribution nodes and customer connections.
Inspect and repair fiber optic cables connectors and equipment at core locations such as Points of Presence (PoPs) and Fiber Distribution Hubs (FDH).
Ensure optimal signal quality and network performance across all fiber links conducting scheduled inspections and addressing any degradation or signal loss.
Respond to network outages fiber cuts and infrastructure issues to restore connectivity swiftly.
Troubleshooting and Repairs:
Diagnose and resolve fiber network issues including signal loss fiber breaks and hardware failures.
Repair damaged cables reconfigure ONTs and troubleshoot customer or infrastructurerelated problems.
Collaborate with the Network Operations Center (NOC) to troubleshoot more complex issues that affect core infrastructure or multiple customer connections.
Customer Service and Support:
Engage with customers during installations and service calls providing guidance on using their network services and resolving basic technical issues.
Conduct postinstallation tests to ensure customer satisfaction and document results.
Infrastructure Documentation and Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of fiber links including installation routes splicing points and testing results for both customer and backbone infrastructure.
Update the network management system with changes made during maintenance or repairs.
Prepare detailed reports after maintenance activities including test results repair actions and any recommended future work.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to all safety standards when working on customer sites and along network infrastructure including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Ensure all installations and maintenance tasks comply with local regulations company policies and best practices for fiber optic work.
Work Environment:
Primarily fieldwork at customer sites network infrastructure locations and along fiber optic routes.
May require working in outdoor conditions at heights and in confined spaces.
Use of safety equipment.
Education: Diploma in Telecommunications Networking or related fields. Certifications in fiber optic installation splicing and testing are preferred.
Experience: 24 years of experience in fiber optic network installation maintenance and troubleshooting with experience managing core infrastructure links.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in fiber optic splicing termination and testing using OTDR and other tools.
Strong knowledge of fiber optic backbone infrastructure including Points of Presence (PoPs) and Fiber Distribution Hubs (FDH).
Ability to read technical diagrams schematics and splicing maps.
Familiarity with network management and ticketing software.
Education
Diploma in Telecommunications, Networking, or related fields. Certifications in fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing are preferred.
