Facilitate effective communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students their hearing peers and school personnel by utilizing American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English:
- Provide accurate and confidential interpretation between spoken language and American Sign Language (ASL) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings including classroom instruction discussions and presentations.
- Facilitate communication between students teachers and other school staff to ensure access to curriculum content instructional materials and classroom discussions.
- Collaborate with teachers and other educational professionals to support the implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and accommodate the unique needs of students with hearing impairments.
- Assist students with understanding and following classroom routines instructions and assignments providing clarification and support as needed.
- Advocate for the inclusion and participation of students who are deaf or hard of hearing in school activities events and extracurricular programs.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions and adhere to ethical standards of practice for sign language interpreters.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance your skills and knowledge as a sign language interpreter and stay current on best practices in the field.
Requirements
- EIPA score of 3.5 or higher.
- Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL)
- PEL endorsed in Educational Sign Language Interpretation.
