Job Description: Industrial Designer for Secure Wearable Technology

Key Responsibilities:

• Bands Design:
  • Material: Develop durable tamperresistant and hypoallergenic bands. Consider materials such as reinforced silicone TPU Kevlar fabric nylon or other nonmetallic alternatives.
  • Design: Create a design that minimizes the potential for misuse as a weapon or tool incorporating secure yet easytoinspect fastening mechanisms.
  • Adjustability: Ensure the bands are highly adjustable to fit various wrist sizes accommodating both male and female wearers.
• Latches/Closure Mechanisms:
  • Security: Design a secure locking mechanism to prevent unauthorized removal by the wearer while allowing quick removal by authorized personnel. Consider incorporating tamperingdetecting features such as a conductive wire within the band.
  • Safety: Ensure the design minimizes the potential for selfharm or harm to others by avoiding sharp edges and using soft covers.
• Materials:
  • Durability: Select materials that withstand daily wear and tear in a prison environment including resistance to intentional breakage attempts. Ensure the device is suitable for 24/7 wear including during showering and exercising.
  • Compliance: Adhere to correctional facility contraband regulations by avoiding metal parts that could be fashioned into tools or weapons.
  • Comfort: Design for longterm comfort considering continuous wear during all daily activities.
• Removable Battery Design:
  • Accessibility: Create a battery insertion/removal mechanism that is easily replaceable by inmate users but remains secure until replacement is necessary.
  • Battery Life: Ensure the battery is longlasting to reduce the need for frequent replacements.

Additional Considerations:

• Water Resistance: Ensure the watch is waterresistant (IP67) to accommodate daily hygiene activities.
• CostEffectiveness: Design should be costeffective to produce and maintain within budget constraints.

Deliverables:

• Concept Sketches: Initial design concepts showcasing different styles and features.
• 3D Models: Detailed 3D renderings of the watch displaying all components.
• Material Specifications: A detailed list of proposed materials and their benefits.

Evaluation Criteria:

• Innovation: Originality and practicality of the design solutions.
• Security Features: Effectiveness in preventing misuse or manipulation.
• Ergonomics: Comfort and usability for the wearer.
• Durability and Maintenance: Longevity of materials and ease of maintenance.
• Cost Efficiency: Overall cost relative to value and durability provided.

Qualifications Required:

• Proven experience in industrial design preferably with wearable technology or securityfocused products.
• Familiarity with designing products for specialized environments such as correctional facilities.
• Strong portfolio demonstrating relevant work.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a team of engineers and correctional staff.
