Job Description

YOUTH INFORMATION DESK ASSISTANT

Join an award winning Library! The Schaumburg Township District Library has an onsite 20 hour/week parttime Information Desk Assistant position open. We are looking for a personable individual to provide library services to our customers: finding materials assisting users with library technology reserving library meeting spaces and registering for library programs and activities. This position involves extensive interaction with the public to provide customers access to the full range of library services via inperson telephone online and other modes of delivery. Hours are as follows and requires flexibility.

  • Wednesdays 4:00pm – 9:00pm
  • Thursdays 4:00pm – 9:00pm

2 weekends a month:

  • Friday 12:30pm – 7:00pm
  • Saturday 8:45am – 5:00pm
  • Sunday 11:45am – 5:00pm

The schedule is based on the needs of the library and could change if and when needed. Starting pay is $15.00$18.35 based on skills and qualifications.

Position Summary:

The Youth Services Assistant is responsible for assisting and fulfilling the patrons’ need for materials information or services at the Youth Services Desk. They keep uptodate on and registers patrons for library programs and activities and provides administrative assistance to the Youth Services Department staff as directed by the Youth Department Director and Youth Department Coordinator. The Youth Services Assistant is also responsible for representing the Library standards as this position mostly interacts with the patrons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Public Service

  • Answer general readyreference inquires and directional questions about the Library and its services both for inperson patrons and patrons contacting the library via phone or email.
  • Utilize the libraries’ computer database to search for library materials and resources.
  • Assist patrons in gathering library materials including patrons who are in the building an those making remote requests.
  • Provide assistance to patrons who request help with department technology including but not limited to the computers the printer the copier the scanner the selfcheck machine and the OPAC machines answer questions and resolve problems.
  • Assist patrons with program registration which includes staying current on programs offered and registration policies.
  • Distribute games headphones and other materials to patrons upon request.
  • Interact positively and professionally with a large volume of patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Enforce Library policies in a positive manner and remind patrons of appropriate behavior as needed.

Other Duties

  • Maintain working knowledge of all technology and software utilized in the Youth Department.
  • Support Youth Services Reference staff with programming by preparing physical materials assisting in cleanup and serving as a program aide if needed.
  • Assist in the care of inhouse games puzzles and other experiencebased collections.
  • Aid in special department projects.
  • Attend designated meetings and trainings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or experience:

High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED); with related youth and caregiver experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
