Background of the position
The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT have initiated a project titled Artemis. Artemis is developing AI technology to enable onfarm breeding. Crop breeding is one of the foundations of agriculture under the current breeding systems a common assumption is that it takes 10 years to develop a new variety. Given the pace of climate change this timeframe is no longer viable. New approaches are needed to speed up the breeding cycle and enable a greater synchrony between plant breeding and onfarm conditions shifting breeding from a majority onstation to majority onfarm process. Artemis is addressing this issue by leveraging the power of technology to enable breeding programs with a new generation of AIpowered and smartphonedeployable tools. The principal technology is computer vision phenotyping with explorations into multimodal data that integrates speech and text to actively integrate farmers into the plant improvement process. Artemis is currently in the second investment phase having been featured recently in Reuters.
The Senior Research Associate will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy integrity and reliability of data collected within the project. They will be responsible for conducting comprehensive data quality assessments identifying issues or discrepancies specific to phenotypic data collection and implementing strategies to improve data quality.
Key duties & responsibilities
Identify root causes of data quality issues related to phenotyping and working with stakeholders to implement corrective actions and process improvements.
Develop and implement data quality standards protocols and guidelines specifically tailored to phenotyping data.
Collaborate with crossfunctional teams such as researchers and data scientists to establish data quality goals metrics and performance indicators.
Provide training and support to staff members on data quality principles procedures and tools specific to phenotyping
Work with the user research group to better understand breeding and agronomic process flows as well as iterative testing of app model development
Requirements
Strong analytical and quantitative skills with experience in data analysis data profiling and data quality assessment particularly in the domain of plant phenotyping.
Experience with data cleansing transformation and validation techniques specific to phenotypic data.
Knowledge of statistical analysis methods and tools for data quality assessment in the agricultural domain.
Familiarity with data annotation tools and platforms such as Roboflow or Label studio.
Excellent problemsolving skills and attention to detail particularly in relation to phenotypic data.
Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across teams and stakeholders in the agricultural and research fields.
Previous Solid understanding of data management concepts including data governance data quality frameworks and data lifecycle management
Proficiency in English
Terms of employment
This is a nationally recruited position based in Arusha Tanzania. The initial contract will be for one year subject to a probation period of three months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources. This position is graded at BG07 level in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy).
