Job Description

General Purpose: Were seeking a seniorlevel associate attorney to join our complex commercial litigation team in Grand Rapids Michigan. This role may also involve assisting our other offices across Michigan in New York City and Washington D.C. as required. Our caseload encompasses a variety of highstakes disputes including global automotive supplier conflicts trade secret disputes shareholder oppression cases breach of contract matters and other complex commercial litigation issues. Clients range from Fortune 500 companies to startups and familyowned businesses. Our ongoing cases are spread across state and federal trial courts nationwide as well as state and federal courts of appeal. We need an attorney capable of performing the general duties of an associate attorney including drafting pleadings conducting research attending hearings handling depositions managing client relationships and providing highlevel support to partnerlevel litigation attorneys throughout all stages of litigation.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Interpret laws rulings and regulations for individuals and businesses involved in litigation.
  • Cultivate and generate new client relationships.
  • Manage new and existing client relationships.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memos for partners.
  • Draft pleadings motions and briefs.
  • Attend various legal proceedings such as motion hearings evidentiary hearings mediations and depositions.
  • Assist with all aspects of discovery including drafting requests and responses preparing initial disclosures and witness preparation.
  • Collaborate with partnerlevel attorneys to determine document production selection of vendors and manner of production.
  • Organize review and maintain documents produced; supervise coding of case documents and development of databases and/or other litigation support applications.
  • Review documents for responsiveness to discovery requests.
  • Monitor status and completeness of discovery responses.
  • Review and assemble deposition trial and motion exhibits.
  • Index and summarize deposition testimony and exhibits.
  • Gather impeaching materials for adverse experts including prior testimony transcripts articles and publications.
  • Prepare trial materials.
  • Attend and assist at pretrial trial and posttrial proceedings.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to grasp complex legal issues quickly.
  • Excellent work ethic and willingness to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in using online legal research services and resources.
  • Superior legal writing and oral communication skills.
  • Sound judgment and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Expertise in various legal concepts practices and procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external contacts.
  • Adaptability to changing environments and situations.
  • Proven ability to work diligently in a fastpaced environment.
  • Experience with document/discovery databases (e.g. Relativity).

Education Experience and Training:

  • 37 years of experience in complex commercial litigation.
  • Graduate of an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Michigan or ability to obtain admission upon commencement of employment.
