Requirements
Fast-paced, multi-tasking job requiring versatility, attention to detail, impeccable time management, and outstanding communication skills. Primarily responsible for helping all members of the patient care staff. Assistants working in all areas of the hospital to provide the best possible care for patients. This position is responsible for assisting in the stocking and cleaning of the hospital. Assistants play an essential role in communication and organization between all team members. These Assistants are responsible for the maintaining excellence in patient care under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician or a higher-level Veterinary Assistant. Responsibilities increase as one learns enough to advance
- 1+ yrs experience working at a high level emergency/specialty hospital
- Open availability is crucial (ie. weekends, some holidays, etc)
- 1 on-call shift per 3-4 week schedule rotation
- Basic knowledge of anatomy for Small Animals, Avian, and Exotics
- Feeding, walking, bathing of hospital patients
- Patient Record Keeping (Treatment Sheet and Computer Record)
- Restraint of patients Using Low-Stress Techniques
- Assist doctors in appointments
- Assist technicians with patient treatments and care
- Client Communication
- Assist with radiographs using appropriate PPE
- Medicate patients as prescribed via oral or topical routes
- Proficient in operating all Laboratory Equipment
- Perform basic animal husbandry including set up and breakdown of cages
- Assist in keeping the hospital clean and stocked
- Report inventory needs to appropriate team member
- Demonstrate knowledge of sanitation and disinfection techniques
- ie. patient kennels and bedding, exam rooms, hospital facilities, and surgical suites
- Able to collect voided urine samples from patients.
- Ability to disconnect/stop and reconnect/start IV pumps
- Effectively communicate with all members of the staff
- Always practice in a manner that upholds NorthStar VETS Core Values
- Complete other projects/duties as assigned by management
- Attend hospital/department meetings as required
- Participate in the on-call and holiday schedule as required
Job Environment
Fast paced, multi-task, must be able to lift up to 45 lbs solo and 150 lbs with some assistance, standing for prolonged periods of time, tolerate sickness/death, exposure to potentially zoonotic diseases and occupational radiation.
