Job Description

Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a reporter to expand our range of rankings and lists, an important and growing initiative for the Journal that already provides invaluable service to a large audience through original research and data analysis.

Our annual College Ranking Report is authoritative and widely relied upon by parents and students. Others, like our airport and management rankings, are perennial engagement drivers. You will help us develop and launch new rankings and lists, support the production and growth of ongoing rankings projects across platforms and evaluate strategic partnerships, tools and methodologies around structured data.

You will use a range of methodologies to engage with topics ranging from the Oscars to airlines to housing. Existing rankings employ the likes of original polling, natural language processing, accessing proprietary data by building relationships with partners within Dow Jones and external organizations, and mining publicly available data.

We're looking for an excellent writer with strong data analysis skills; a good sense of topics that interest the Journals audiences, current and future; strong project management skills; and a good sense of design of user-centric tools and content. We value collaboration and creativity, and are focused on leaving our audiences smarter and smiling.

You will be part of the New Formats team, which develops novel approaches to bring our journalism to new readers and deepen our relationship with our existing audience. You will work closely with reporters and editors across the newsroom who have expertise in various rankings areas as well as the Journals visuals, product, design and engineering departments. You will be part of a creative group of storytellers who prioritize audience engagement in their work. Its essential to have an enthusiasm for news and the public mission of journalism.

You will work in our New York office. You will report to Harry Carr, Rankings Editor.

You Will:

Help create excellent rankings experiences that serve audiences with actionable and customizable information.

Be excited to work on a wide range of subjects, applying a wide range of methods.

Learn and master new skills and build your knowledge base on new topics.

Generate ideas and, with support from the Rankings Editor, lead them from conception through to publication.

Build relationships and negotiate with data providers.

Work collaboratively with specialist teams within the WSJ and/or Dow Jones.

Provide impeccable quality assurance.

You Have:

Strong writing skills.

A passion for experimentation and a facility for data.

Creative ideas for rankings and data sources.

A sharp focus on accuracy and a keen eye for detail.

Excellent organization and project management skills.

Superb news judgment; a strong journalistic foundation as a reporter.

Extra consideration will be given to candidates who have skills appropriate for advanced data and visual journalism.

The Journals reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards. We report without fear or bias, and we maintain a proper sense of perspective, detachment and objectivity in our reporting.
