Overall Position Summary and Objectives

The Office of Pain Policy and Planning (OPPP) supports the coordination of pain research and health care policies across NIH and the Federal government provides support and leadership for the NIH HEAL Initiative serves as a hub for outreach on pain research and provides information to the public and government entities on pain and pain research. The OPPP is searching for a science writer with knowledge of pain research and public health policies concerning pain. The position would be a 50% part time contractor. The science writer should have skills knowledge experience and understanding of the science and management of pain strong written and oral communication skills and critical thinking and ability manage time effectively.

Statement of Work Details

Prepares scientific and technical materials for publication.

  • Research write and edit in accordance with industry academic and publication standards book manuscripts and chapters peerreviewed journal articles conference and symposium proceedings and general print media articles.
  • Research write and edit scientific and technical information in a variety of formats including articles blog posts factsheets onepagers brochures presentations and speeches workshop summaries reports briefing materials press releases content for digital media in online and print format.
  • Research write and edit technical reports of original research specifications findings and conclusions for submission to administrative legislative and regulatory review.
  • Research write and edit policy papers featuring recommendations based on original research findings and conclusions.
  • Prepare technical summaries of proposed ongoing or concluded research projects and studies for circulation within and among scientific elements within the government.
  • Participate in pain research relevant meetings and workshops to provide notes summaries or reports for ongoing HEAL activities the IPRCC and other identified needs. 3
  • Support development of clearance/policy documents for OPPP. 5
  • Participate in collecting/collating information to support the HEAL strategic planning effort summarizing meeting minutes/output and developing draft and final reports. 4
  • Attend work group meetings per week products and develop materials to support the meetings and to record the meeting output.
  • Collate materials from the strategic planning effort and synthesize a final report of the recommendations evolved from the planning process.

Conducts advanced literature reviews and prepares reports summaries and presentations on findings.

  • Perform literature reviews of scientific and technical literature to identify methodologies findings and conclusions of significance and prepare summaries and reports for distribution among research and medical staffs.
  • Assess proposed and ongoing programs projects and studies and conduct literature reviews to support researchers and study staff inform guide validate refute etc. findings and conclusions.
  • Prepare summaries reports dashboards and presentations on results of literature reviews to researchers and staffs.
  • Conduct research using background literature and source material sufficient to accomplish the development of high quality wellwritten and accurate products. 2

Creates and maintains databases of all research materials literature reviews and publications.

  • Compile and organize primary research data from research conducted and develop tabular and graphical representations of the data.

Develops and edits official program management reports official correspondence and audit reports.

  • Prepare letters memoranda reports agendas abstracts protocols and laboratory announcements for internal distribution.
  • Coordinate with senior executives to prepare outline and collect and assemble into annual reports.
  • Collect and assemble source materials into succinct response to research and operational audit requests.
  • Assist program and project managers draft and edit scientific documentation related to research and operational projects.
  • Review and provide comment on the scientific and technical accuracy of a variety of reports presentations and correspondence.
  • Review and provide edits to a variety of external communication and informational materials to ensure scientific and technical accuracy and completeness.

Provide scientific and technical writing expertise to assist researchers and staff prepare documentation.

  • Design and maintain templates and detailed usage instructions for preparing common documentation such as posters presentations reports proposals abstracts etc.

Finalizes documents and prepares materials for publication.

  • Proofread all documents (drafts and final forms) for scientific and technical accuracy and completeness prior to submitting them for review and approval or acceptance.
  • Complete and verify all necessary forms required for submission of manuscripts to scientific and peer reviewed journals.
  • Crosscheck original and referenced data and verify cited content from source documents and perform originality reviews or all scientific and technical writing.
  • Critically review draft documents synthesize comments and incorporate appropriate comments from other reviewers into successive drafts to prepare final documents.
  • Maintain records of source material interviews drafts and final products and materials for archiving and compliance with Federal records statues regulations and guidelines. 1
  • Research and draft materials for presentations related to pain research by HEAL and NINDS leadership. Apply editorial standards and applicable style guidelines to all materials.

Provides expert guidance direction and support to executives in the development and distribution of scientific and technical written materials.

  • Provide expert advice for general health and science communications activities that involve content creation for health communication and outreach projects scientific and technical publication promotional materials and online events.
  • Serve as senior subject matter expert for editorial operations of written content produced by researchers medical and program staff and operational staff within the Office of the Director.
  • Provide expert advice and consultation to staff on issues related to scientific and programmatic written articles.
  • Advise executives and program managers on written materials to be developed and present strategies for maximizing impact and performance toward organizational and programmatic goas and objectives.

Mentors coaches and trains writers editors and staff on scientific and technical writing and editing practices and procedures.

  • Researchers repackages and shares among research and operational staff best practices tips and practices for improving the quality and consistency of scientific and technical writing
