The Role:

The Senior Automation Scientist - Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) position uses technical expertise to support the Sequencing and Life Sciences team to drive customer satisfaction and to increase sales revenue by identifying opportunities for new sequencing product applications on third-party automated liquid handling systems in the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) space.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a mid-career NGS automation scientist who seeks to troubleshoot and solve complex problems with personal independence and autonomy in a fast-paced team environment. You are able to prioritize, balance multiple projects, and adapt to rapidly changing requirements, priorities, and schedules. With a strong customer consultative mindset and interpersonal skills, you are adept at applying and communicating scientific knowledge and analyses to effectively engage customers and foster relationships. You enjoy coaching/mentoring others, expanding your knowledge and application of innovative Roche solutions (chemistry, immunology, molecular, life sciences, and IT solutions), and staying current with cutting-edge automated liquid handler market trends.

KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide automation-related technical expertise to pre-sales staff, cross-functional teams, and customers

  • Support sales presentations and product demonstrations, such as rapid prototyping of mini-applications, to help assess potential application of products/solutions based on customer needs

  • Prepare detailed product specifications and design implementation specifications for customer products/applications/solutions

  • Has broad awareness of current NGS Automation liquid handling market to develop methods for NGS workflows on liquid handling platforms

  • Design and execute process verification or optimization studies, including data generation, analysis, and reporting to key stakeholders

  • Drive automated liquid handling vendor relationships to build and drive automated method availability and support

  • Design user guides, training documentation, and marketing collateral related to automated NGS solutions

  • Manage in-house automated liquid handling systems and facilities

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field

  • 5 - 7 years of professional experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently reside within or willing to relocate to the Wilmington, Massachusetts area

  • Able and willing to travel 25% or more, which may include overnight travel

  • Bachelor’s in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline with 6 years of relevant experience OR

  • Master in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline with 3 years of relevant experience OR

  • PhD in Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline with 2 years of relevant experience

  • Relevant experience includes operating, programming and troubleshooting instrumentation and/or system solutions

  • Successful experience providing customer support and interaction

  • Previous experience mentoring and/or training

  • Minimum of 5 years demonstrated theoretical and practical knowledge of NGS sample preparation workflows and applications, including experience with Molecular Biology/Biochemistry concepts, practices and procedures

  • Knowledge of bioinformatics and NGS data analysis

  • Experience with nanoliter liquid handling technologies

  • Strong customer consultative skills which includes application of scientific knowledge and analysis, exceptional customer engagement, and fostering of customer relationships
