Job Overview

The British Council Teaching Centre in Egypt is looking a full-time Senior Teacher, Adults to work in one of the Cairo branches.

Egypt plays a major role in the British Council’s ELT work across the whole Arabic-speaking region. The Teaching Centre is one of the oldest and biggest in the network. Demand for English is strong and classrooms are generally full. It is a busy operation working alongside the Exams and Programmes departments. The British Council Egypt is also a regional training centre and there are excellent opportunities for further development in various directions. The centres run part-time and full-time CELTA courses, distance and face-to-face DELTA programmes, TYLEC and various management and general training courses. Sponsorship is available on most courses for suitable candidates. For more experienced teachers there is a supportive environment to start working in teacher training, including becoming a DELTA local tutor and a TYLEC tutor, as well as the opportunity to move into programme management.

Role Purpose

To ensure the British Council maintains its reputation as the highest quality provider of English Language Teaching by providing effective support to the management of Egypt Young Learner products and services, making a contribution to the development and expansion of the YL business. To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, and ensure that British Council Egypt is an example of UK ELT best practice.


Main Accountabilities:

Operational Administration

  • Act as Duty Officer as scheduled and carry out related tasks: assist standby teachers, liaise with Deployment Team.
  • Keep up to date with all Teaching Centre products and support teachers with adult products as needed.
  • Work with the Head of Adults and country Adult team to introduce and maintain agreed policies and procedures relating to products and services.
  • Work with the Head of Adults to plan class schedule for adult classes, tracking registration and making corrections to the schedule in order to maintain high levels of class utilisation.
  • Work with customer service, Head of Adults and Deployment Team to plan teachers' timetables, ensuring high teacher utilisation.
  • Ensure that Customer Service standards are met and maintained.
  • Ensure that administrative duties performed by staff (record-keeping, registers etc.) are up-to-date and accurate.

Adult Product Management and Development

  • Together with Head of Adults and country Adult team, develop the programme in line with country and regional strategy.
  • Ensure all teachers follow clear procedures of feedback, meetings, and assessment so learners can understand the progress they are making.
  • Provide induction, guidance and support on the teaching centre's behaviour management procedures to ensure that teachers adhere to the Behaviour Policy
  • Ensure that UK or local copyright laws (whichever are stronger) are fully observed.

Testing and Teaching Schedule

  • Work with Head of Adults and Customer Service teams to track students' progress, delivering one-to-one my Advisory sessions in response to need.
  • Work with teachers to ensure that they complete assessments as scheduled and give the required standard of feedback. Provide guidance to teachers on how to run assessments efficiently and effectively.

Professional Support:

  • Work with the Head of Adults and the country training team to contribute to the ongoing professional development of teaching in your branch
  • Work with the Head of Adults and country Adult team, including Higher Teachers, to contribute to:
  • Delivery of training programmes
  • Delivery of teacher induction sessions
  • Classroom observation and feedback
  • Professional development for teachers
  • Input into the teaching timetable in order to support teachers' training and development needs
