Job Description

Summary of Position

The Assistant Director of Public Safety is responsible for managing the daily operations and investigations conducted in the Department of Public Safety. This position supervises all fulltime and student officers including monitoring and enforcing policies practices and protocols within the Department of Public Safety. This position also coordinates investigative enforcement and educational activities with appropriate university officials and city and state agencies.

Primary Responsibilities

Patrol Operations Management

  • Supervise and maintain schedule for fulltime parttime and oncall patrol officers including student officers.
  • Administer protocols practice and policies that promote campus safety and reduce risk.

Event and Emergency Management

  • Assist the director in the development of plans for emergency response crowd control and safety and security issues.
  • Work with university and city officials to provide fire safety emergency medical services and security for university events.

Incident Reports and Investigations Management

  • Review daily reports departmental activities to identify and lead all internal investigations where there is a violation of federal state county or city ordinances or laws as well as all internal violations of policy procedure or protocol.
  • Utilize campus security systems interview appropriate individuals involved and prepare investigation reports.
  • Submit investigation findings to appropriate leadership team members and external authorities.
  • Review all reports to ensure crimes are correctly classified under the Clery Act maintain daily crime log issue crime alerts and assist the director with Clery Act compliance.

Conduct Officer

  • Work with the Dean of Students and Title IX Coordinator on matters related to violations of the standards of conduct assist in investigations and adjudications and conduct annual policy and procedure review.

Security Systems and Crime Prevention

  • Manage CCTV card access alarm emergency phones and related security systems.
  • Complete security surveys of campus property including recommendations for system improvements and expansion.

Professional Development and Training

  • Develop and lead all training for professional and student officers.
  • Manage and maintain personnel records to ensure certification and endorsement requirements for all professionals staff.
  • Seek out professional development certification and endorsementbased trainings for staff.

Fleet and Equipment Audits and Maintenance

  • Assist with audits of all security software programs medical supplies narcotic and alcohol testing kits and evidence among other items.
  • Oversee the maintenance repair and/or replacement of the patrol vehicles.
  • Oversee the audit of all individual and shared equipment in the department as well as repairs and replacements.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Supervise the activities of the department in the directors absence.
  • Develop and maintain close and effective working relationships with university administration faculty staff and students; and with city officials and departments.
  • Participate in committees and work groups to plan appropriate security and safety services for the campus.
  • Remain oncall for emergencies or consultation.
  • All other duties as assigned or as apparent by supervisor.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Typical work environment is an office with desktop computing use. Sedentary work for long periods of time.
  • Infrequent strenuous physical conditions in potentially extreme temperature conditions such as medical or security emergencies indoors or outdoors.
  • Exposure to irritating nose levels or substances such as in emergencies (e.g. chemicals mace etc..
  • Exposure to dust dirt mold dampness odors associated with health and safety remediation.
  • Intense work environment associated with infrequent encounters with hostile or injured persons.
  • Infrequent reaching; infrequent lifting and carrying of items 20 lbs.
  • Occasional long or irregular hours including some weekends and evenings.
  • Occasional travel related to institutional international sites conferences or seminars.

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in related field.
  • Minimum of three 3 years of supervisory experience in a law enforcement public safety or security department required.
  • Valid drivers license required and must be insurable under the universitys motor vehicle insurance.
  • Meet state background check requirements under the Kari Koskinen Apartment Managers Act and requirements for a Protective Service Agent in the State of Minnesota.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in public safety or security in a higher education setting.
  • Successful completion of FEMA courses ICS100 200 and 700.
  • Experience with security systems including CCure 800 security system Milestone IP video image software and installation and maintenance of a variety of cameras card readers door hardware and related technology and devices.
  • Experience with community policing.

Knowledge Skills Abilities

  • Excellent problemsolving skills including ability to initiate a prompt and appropriate response often under stressful circumstances that impact life safety valuable assets property and institutional reputation.
  • Knowledge of legal issues in higher education including arrest law search and seizure criminal law use of force Clery Act Title IX and other relevant legal issues.
  • Ability to supervise employees including setting goals managing performance and motivating team members.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.
  • Intermediate computer skills including creating and editing documents spreadsheets and basic databases;  sending emails and searching the internet for relevant information; creating custom reports; and searching incident report and security systems.
  • Ability to write and evaluate incident reports.
  • Ability to manage video audio and other evidence.
  • Ability to conduct a full range of administrative functions and project management effectively with solid organizational and communication skills. 
  • Ability to lead teach and mentor others.
  • Ability to work in a team environment work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate patience and understanding.

Compensation & Benefits at Augsburg

  • The compensation range is $55000 $63000 per year DOQ.
