Position Description
Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves developing safety policies and procedures participating in the safety training and education of staff inspecting work areas and activities for hazards and investigating accidents. May train others. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
Major/Essential Functions
Assists Laboratory Section Manager in maintaining computer databases for the institutional laboratory safety program.
Assists Laboratory Section Manager in maintaining the institutional chemical inventory barcoding program reviewing reports updating inventories and tracking chemicals as needed.
Assists Laboratory Section Manager in the analysis of laboratory inspections surveys hazards/incidents registrations and followup.
Assists Laboratory Section Manager in preparing reports on laboratory inspections/surveys inventories fume hoods safety showers and eyewash stations.
Prepares periodic reports and summaries of the laboratory safety program as directed by the supervisor.
Conducts periodic inspections and checks of fume hoods safety showers and eyewash stations.
Assists in conducting laboratory safety inspections and surveys.
Assists in developing producing and presenting safety training and safety programs in the areas of biological chemical occupational and laboratory safety.
Prepares equipment and instrument calibration reports.
Assists in responding to HAZMAT incidents involving hazardous materials and in decontamination as directed by qualified personnel.
Participates in crosstraining with all other Safety Services divisions and campuses to enhance the continuity of operations of the Laboratory Safety Division.
Occasional Duties
Performs other similar and related duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
Required Qualifications
Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of collegelevel work in Occupational Health and Safety with coursework in the assigned area.
Four years of jobrelated experience. Additional jobrelated education may substitute for required experience on a yearforyear basis.
Thorough knowledge of federal state and local laws pertaining to occupational safety.
General knowledge of safety procedures related to assigned tasks.
Ability to assist in executing a campus safety program establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate ideas clearly and concisely.
Preferred Qualifications
BS in basic sciences preferred (Chemistry Biology etc..
Safety certifications such as ASP CSP CHMM OHST.
Two years of work experience in occupational environmental health and safety or research laboratory.
