Job Description

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon with a subspecialty foot and ankle interest who is passionate about the delivery of care and who enjoys working with likeminded clinicians who share in this vision.

Whether you are looking for your first Consultant post or are an experienced Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant we have much to offer with ample opportunity and encouragement to pursue research improvement projects teaching and supervision. 

The successful candidate will join 28 other Consultants 1 Specialty Doctor 1 Associate Specialist and 33 Resident Doctors and will be responsible for the management of Trauma and Orthopaedic patients along our care pathways and will be part of a team managing acute trauma lists trauma meetings fracture clinics and regular Multidisciplinary team meetings. 

They will be required to contribute to a 1 in 16 oncall rota.

Full ranges of trauma and elective services are provided.  The Orthopaedic Surgeons work in close association with the Southampton University Hospital Trust which is our Major Trauma Centre.  We accept patients from the Wessex Neurological Centre in Southampton patients with severe neurological damage may be treated in The Wessex Spinal Injury Unit at Odstock Hospital Salisbury which is also the location of the Regional Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit.

Virtual fracture clinics are held every day and face to face fracture clinics run Monday to Friday  all day.  These are preceded by a trauma round where cases admitted during the previous night requiring surgery are assessed and their management determined.  The trauma list takes place in dedicated theatres every day with a second trauma list Monday to Friday. At present there are five further sub speciality trauma lists during the week on various days. 

The department was successfully selected by NHS England to run the Major Revision Centre for the Southeast Region for knee revision patients.  Fortnightly meetings take place for MDT discussions and the department also holds fortnightly complex arthroplasty combined clinics for assessment of patients who may require complex revision surgery or pose a particular difficulty for their primary joint replacement. 

Joint clinics are held monthly between individual Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Consultant Rheumatologists.  A full range of physiotherapy facilities are supplied with a dedicated physiotherapy room on the Orthopaedic floor and a fully equipped physio department and gymnasium are provided at QAH. The Hand Therapy team attend one of combined hand clinics held weekly.

Qualifications :

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCS T&O
  • Fellowship in foot & ankle surgery
  • Experience in foot & ankle surgery

Clinical Requirements

Essential

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via
  • Certificate of completion of training (CCT) or CESR (CP) proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be due within 6 months of interview.
  • CESR /portfolio pathway or alternative routes to specialist registration
  • An appropriate higher Trauma and Orthopaedic surgical qualification

Clinical Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrable skills and experience of Trauma and foot & ankle surgery
  • Understanding of clinical risk management

Knowledge

  • Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and use of evidencebased practice
  • IT skills
  • Effective confident presentation ability
  • Experience in and outside speciality
