Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 6000 incarcerated individuals and 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) has the need for a Facility Fire Response Coordinator who will report directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Security Operations. The Facility Fire Response Coordinator will:
Manage the Fire Safety Unit (FSU) daytoday operations administration and training
Facilitate and coordinate initial response to fires occurring in DOC facilities and property
including coordinating initial evacuation suppression and communication between agency
stakeholders and incoming external resources such as the FDNY
Develop and execute a Fire Brigade training program for FSU members to operate efficiently
and safely in the applicable jail setting (i.e. smoke/ confined space conditions ICS SCBA etc.)
Collaborate with DOC Training to develop and deliver fire safety training for all new Correction
Officers newly promoted Captains and Assistant Deputy Wardens and other staff.
Liaise with internal facilities and special unit stakeholders as well as external responders
(i.e. FDNY NYCEM etc.) in the event of fire and emergency response preparedness training
and strategic planning
Monitor and respond to fire alarms and conduct routine inspections of fire and life safety
equipment and systems as defined by applicable agency directives and industry standards
Design and execute effective drills in partnership with DOC Preparedness and Resilience
Special Operations Division and Facility Operations as well as applicable local FDNY Battalions
at DOC Facilities
Seek and develop capacity (i.e. equipment training professional development) for the Fire
Safety Unit via grant opportunities new need requests and partnerships
Abide by but also refine/develop standard operating procedures and directives to meet the
needs of current facilities and future jail locations for fire and emergency response operations
Participate in the planning activities and provide input on design layout for new construction
projects including the Therapeutic Outposts BoroughBased Jail locations and new construction
projects
Collaboration with investigative bodies to collect and preserve evidence and support fire
investigations
Collect and evaluate fire statistics for the purpose of managing and mitigating sources of
ignition and fire risk
