The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of highquality drinking water managing wastewater and stormwater and reducing air noise and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country with nearly 6000 employees. DEPs water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the systems 2000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment (BWT) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage within the five boroughs of the City. This includes 14
wastewater treatment plants sludge dewatering facilities collections facilities (pumping stations combined sewer overflow retention facilities regulators tide gates etc.) wastewater laboratories and harbor vessels.
The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment is seeking to fill the position of Section Chief of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Emergency Response and Support who will be a critical support leader for achieving the Bureaus number one stated goal: Ensure a culture of safety where safe work practices are fully embraced and integrated into all our work.
Job Purpose:
Under jurisdiction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety with wide latitude for independent judgment and decisionmaking serves as EHS Section Chief for EHS Emergency Response and Support in the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment.
Job Tasks/Duties:
The EHS Emergency Response and Support will manage and direct environmental health and safety (EHS) staff in evaluating facility performance and identifying key performance indicators to consistently analyze EHS trends successes as well as emerging risks across BWT.
Responsible for:
a) Responding on a 24/7 basis to EHS emergencies at BWT facilities.
b) Working collaboratively with Operations to resolve EHS issues.
c) Support emergency evacuation drills and scenarios to ensure employee safety and compliance.
d) Attending labor management meetings and work closely with employee representatives to resolve safety concerns.
e) Conduct Incidents and Near Miss investigations to better understand root causes and effective preventive and corrective actions.
f) Assist with identifying leading and lagging indicators and identify solutions to mitigate conditions.
g) Assist with computerbased systems for ensuring entry tracking and closeouts and overall quality assurance (i.e. AIIMS).
STATIONARY ENGINEER (ELECTRIC) 91645
Qualifications :
1. Five years of fulltime satisfactory experience in responsible charge of the operation of plants or facilities utilizing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more) including troubleshooting and repairing such equipment in one or more of the following: electrical generating stations electrical switching stations water treatment plants wastewater treatment plants water pumping stations wastewater pumping stations other collections facilities or high volume ventilation systems; or
2. Two years of fulltime satisfactory experience as described in 1 above and a baccalaureate degree in electrical civil or mechanical engineering or in electrical civil or mechanical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or
3. Four years of fulltime satisfactory experience as described in 1 above and an associate degree in science or applied science from an accredited college or university with a major in water quality monitoring wastewater treatment plant operations environmental health environmental control or in electrical mechanical or in civil technology or in electrical mechanical or civil engineering technology; or
4. Two years of fulltime satisfactory experience as described in 1 above plus three years of fulltime satisfactory experience as an electrician; or
5. Five years of fulltime satisfactory experience as an electrician including three years of fulltime satisfactory experience troubleshooting and repairing high tension electrical equipment (600 volts or more) as that described in 1 above; or
6. A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience equivalent to 1 2 3 4 or 5 above. Education may be substituted for experience on the basis that one year of experience will be credited for each 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university leading to a baccalaureate or associate degree in one of the disciplines described in 2 or 3 above. However all candidates must have at least two years of satisfactory experience as described in 1 above except for candidates who qualify under 5 above.
