The Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) is looking for a Research Lead with knowledge of therapeutics. We are keen to hear from individuals who have experience of discovery research and how it relates to therapeutics development.
This is an exciting time to join Wellcome under the direction of our new CEO JohnArne Rottingen who joined in 2024. The Infectious Disease Solutions Programme (IDSP) is a relatively new team and as such an opportune time to join and help sculpt future direction of our therapeutics portfolio. The team focusses on two key drivers of infectious disease – environmental change and antimicrobial resistance. We take a holistic approach combining an interest in gaining a better understanding of these drivers in order to drive the development and use of interventions (including vector control vaccines and small molecules). Our current focus is on vector borne disease cholera TB and AMR with a geographical focus on Africa and South SouthEast Asia.
We are looking for an individual with a passion for global health to work collaboratively across the IDSP team and Wellcome to address key gaps in the global health field through delivery of our therapeutics portfolio for a number of infectious diseases that affect Africa and South Asia.
You will be joining a multidisciplinary collaborative and enthusiastic team focused on supporting science to bring innovative solutions to combat infectious disease in the most affected communities.
In this role you will :
- Work with the Head of Vector Control & Therapeutics to lead the development and oversight of the therapeutics portfolio in line with the strategic objectives of the four thematic areas of the infectious disease team (i.e vector borne disease cholera TB and AMR).
- Ensure a breadth and depth of knowledge within the therapeutics areas and the wider research and funding landscape and use this to identify and devise approaches to capitalise on emerging opportunities within the field of therapeutics.
- Deliver highimpact activities in line with the wider aims of infectious disease therapeutics at Wellcome including leading the effective delivery of funding decisions providing critical scientific assessment participating in decisionmaking reviews and making clear recommendations to senior management.
- Effectively use knowledge and expertise to inform and influence internal and external networks to seek advice and input from experts as needed and identify and leverage cofunding opportunities.
- Clearly communicate the strategy and portfolio of IDSP therapeutics to internal and external audiences using knowledge and expertise to be a respected and authoritative voice.
- Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation collaborating across departments.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Proven significant experience and knowledge of discovery research and its application to therapeutics development.
- Experience of setting up and delivering high profile strategic initiatives with multidisciplinary teams at a variety of scales.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and negotiate partnerships with key individuals and organisations internationally in public or private sectors.
- Experience of managing projects and/or people across different areas of expertise.
- Welldeveloped interpersonal skills with an ability to challenge and influence senior stakeholders whilst building and maintaining relationships.
- Excellent delivery logistical and problemsolving skills.
