Description

Earthjustice’s International Program is accepting applications for a Temporary Staff Scientist. This position is designed to fill in temporarily for a Staff Scientist on leave and will not lead to permanent employment at Earthjustice. The employer of record for this role will be an external staffing agency and pay for this role will be processed through that agency.

The Temporary Staff Scientist supports our International Program by leveraging deep scientific expertise to develop the scientific and factual basis for our advocacy. The International Program works with public interest and community groups around the world to establish strengthen and enforce national and international legal protections for the environment and public health. Core focus areas of Earthjustice’s international efforts include combating climate change reducing the world’s dependence on coal and gasfired power and promoting clean energy in its stead and promoting citizen participation in environmental protection. At the heart of our work is the principle that all people have a right to a healthy and sustainable environment.

This is a fulltime (37.5 hours/week) role that will report to a Senior Attorney in the International Program. The tentative start and end dates are April through October 2025. This position can be remote or if preferred the successful candidate may work a hybrid schedule from one of our offices .

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates:
    • The scientific and technical bases for potential new cases or issues developing research strategies.
    • Scientific materials for rigor and soundness of scientific methodology.
    • Consistency of inputs analysis and underlying assumptions of scientific materials with accepted methodological approaches and epistemological principles.
  • Reviews analyzes summarizes and synthesizes caserelated scientific documents and information as well as more general environmental planning documents technical support documents scientific studies and other scientific and technical information to support legal strategies
  • Drafts scientific and technical portions of legal documents fact sheets slides reports and other materials for internal use or external use with clients the media and others.
  • Conducts detailed scientific and technical research and quantitative data analyses.
  • Designs coordinates and reviews external technical expert submissions for legal advocacy.
Qualifications

  • Requires a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in environmental science or a related field or the equivalent level of research and analytic experience. Ph.D. candidates will also be considered.
  • 3 years of experience conducting scientific research and analysis.
  • Exceptional scientific ability and capacity for penetrating critical analysis of primary research and other scientific data and materials.
  • Deep technical expertise in analytical and quantitative methods relevant to subject matter area.
  • Expertise in or experience with environmental and health impacts of fossil fuel (coal gas oil) exploration production transport and consumption would be particularly useful. Experience working on any of these outside of the U.S. is a plus.
  • Experience drafting and/or critiquing Environmental Impact Assessments preferred.
  • Spanish language skills preferred but not required.

Compensation

Compensation is determined by experience level and working location. Remote applications should indicate in their application the city and state from which they will be working to confirm the salary range for that location. Any benefits will be offered and administered by the employer of record.

  • Seattle WA; Washington D.C.; Massachusetts; Chicago IL; Los Angeles CA; and Honolulu HI: $58.51 $65.03
  • Philadelphia PA; Juneau AK; Anchorage AK; Providence RI; and Denver CO: $55.44 $61.59
  • Tallahassee FL; Miami FL; Bozeman MT; Madison WI; and Maine: $52.36 $58.15
  • Remote (US): varies by location
