Job Description

As our Sustainability Integration & LADAR Advisor of your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Safety Health and Environment
    • Support a safety and health culture throughout all team interactions taking personal accountability to achieve zero harm and prevent fatalities.
    • Act as a mentor to promote a workplace ethos prioritising safety and health considerations.
    • Encourage open dialogue within the team empowering members to identify and address unsafe practices without fear of repercussions.
  • Performance and Delivery
  • Livelihood Programme:
    • Collaborate with local stakeholders to assess and respond to the needs of livelihood programs tailored for affected communities.
    • Monitor the successful implementation of livelihood initiatives in collaboration with community members.
    • Organise and facilitate communitydriven campaigns to enhance awareness and participation in affected areas.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Build trust and engage in ongoing dialogue with local communities affected by the project to actively ascertain their needs and concerns.
    • Maintain adequate communication channels between the company and affected communities ensuring transparency and responsiveness.
    • Participate in comprehensive social impact assessments identifying potential ramifications on communities and individuals due to project operations.
    • Evaluate and monitor potential displacement and resettlement issues related to project activities ensuring appropriate measures are in place.
    • Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to develop strategies for mitigating potential risks to budgets and timelines.
  • Resettlement Planning:
    • Contribute to formulating resettlement plans adhering to local legislation and international best practices.
    • Work alongside project teams to synchronise resettlement plans and project schedules for seamless execution.
  • Documentation and Reporting:
    • Refine and maintain comprehensive documentation concerning resettlement initiatives and processes.
    • Prepare and distribute periodic reports detailing the progress and status of resettlement activities.
  • Legal Compliance:
    • Ensure all resettlement and land access activities comply with South African regulations and standards.
    • Stay abreast of international standards and best practices related to resettlement initiatives ensuring alignment with company policies.
  • Stakeholder Coordination:
    • Support integrating sustainability practices within the Kumba Business Unit offering strategic inputs on sustainable development initiatives.
    • Build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders pertinent to Corporate Affairs in the Sishen/Kumba context.
    • Adhere to external local requirements concerning legislative regulatory and permitting processes.
    • Foster collaborative partnerships with government entities NGOs and community leaders to reinforce stakeholder engagement efforts.
    • Align resettlement strategies with overarching project objectives to drive sustainability efforts.
    • Propel the execution of Sishens sustainability initiatives as outlined in the Sustainable Mining Plan and the Anglo Social Way version 3.
  • Budgeting and Cost Management:
    • Aid in developing and overseeing budgets for resettlement activities ensuring fiscal discipline and transparency in financial reporting.
    • Monitor and manage expenditures related to resettlement to maintain alignment with budgetary constraints.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Implement robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks to gauge the impact and effectiveness of resettlement plans.
    • Actively engage with affected communities to gather feedback and refine strategies as necessary.
  • Conflict Resolution:
    • Proactively resolve disputes arising during resettlement fostering a collaborative atmosphere.
    • Mediate between community stakeholders and project teams to secure mutually beneficial outcomes.
  • Training and Capacity Building:
    • Design and deliver training programs to empower affected communities and enhance their capacity for selfadvocacy.
    • Inform community members of their rights and entitlements throughout the resettlement process.
  • Ethical Considerations:
    • Uphold the highest ethical standards when working with communities impacted by resettlement ensuring transparency in all dealings.
    • Commit to fair and equitable treatment of all individuals complying with governance processes to secure necessary approvals and support for initiatives.

This role is in Corporate Relations (COR) department on a band 6.10 level reporting to the Specialist Sustainability Integration & LADAR


Qualifications :

  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Higher National qualification in a Social Science/Sustainable Development or related discipline (NQF6)
  • Diploma in Social Science/Sustainable Development or related discipline or equivalent (NQF7)
  • SA Drivers License

Technical Knowledge

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a mining environment that involves permitting or resettlement.
  • Understanding sustainability concepts including sustainable development corporate social responsibility and environmental stewardship.
  • Awareness of local and international laws and regulations related to resettlement land access and community rights including the South African legal framework.
  • Knowledge of tools and methods used to assess the social impacts of projects on communities including qualitative and quantitative analysis.
  • Familiarity with best resettlement planning and implementation practices including frameworks like the World Banks Operational Policy on Involuntary Resettlement.
  • Understanding economic development initiatives including how to design and implement livelihood programs tailored to community needs.
