Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Lesson Planning and Curriculum Delivery:

  • Curriculum Development: Plan and deliver lessons based on the humanities curriculum, ensuring that content is aligned with educational standards and is relevant, engaging, and age-appropriate for students.
  • Subject Instruction: Teach a variety of humanities subjects such as history, geography, sociology, politics, economics, or philosophy, depending on the specific requirements of the school or educational system. Provide clear explanations, interactive discussions, and opportunities for students to apply concepts to real-world situations.
  • Creative Lesson Design: Use a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, group discussions, multimedia resources, case studies, field trips, and project-based learning, to engage students and bring abstract concepts to life.
  • Differentiated Instruction: Tailor lessons to accommodate different learning styles and ability levels, ensuring that all students, including those with special educational needs (SEN), are able to access the curriculum and succeed.

2. Assessment and Student Progress:

  • Designing Assessments: Develop a range of formative and summative assessments such as quizzes, essays, group projects, presentations, and exams that help evaluate student understanding of the material.
  • Grading and Feedback: Provide timely and constructive feedback on student assessments, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Encourage critical thinking and reflection through written or verbal feedback.
  • Monitoring Progress: Track student progress and identify any learning gaps. Use assessment data to adjust teaching strategies and offer additional support to students who need it, including providing extra help or enrichment activities for advanced students.

3. Fostering Critical Thinking and Discussion:

  • Encouraging Inquiry: Foster a classroom environment that encourages curiosity and questioning. Humanities teachers inspire students to think critically about the world around them, analyze historical events, consider societal issues, and reflect on their own perspectives and values.
  • Facilitating Discussions: Guide and facilitate classroom discussions, debates, and simulations that encourage students to explore different viewpoints, engage with diverse perspectives, and develop their own opinions based on evidence and reasoning.
  • Promoting Global Awareness: Help students understand the connections between local, national, and global issues by exploring historical events, contemporary politics, cultural differences, and social challenges that shape the world today.

4. Student Support and Well-being:

  • Individualized Support: Provide additional support for students who are struggling, offering extra lessons, tutoring sessions, or accommodations to help them meet the learning objectives. Also offer challenges for gifted and talented students to encourage deeper exploration of humanities topics.
  • Mentoring and Guidance: Act as a mentor for students, providing guidance on academic goals, career aspirations, and personal development. Offer advice on college/university applications and future study options related to the humanities field.
  • Inclusive Teaching: Ensure that the classroom is an inclusive environment where all students feel respected and valued. Address issues such as bullying or discrimination, and make sure that students' diverse backgrounds and experiences are acknowledged and celebrated in the curriculum.

Classroom Management:
Maintaining Discipline: Set clear expectations for behavior and classroom rules. Foster a respectful, focused, and productive classroom environment that encourages active participation and minimizes disruptions.
Engagement Strategies: Use interactive and dynamic teaching techniques to keep students engaged, whether it's through hands-on activities, digital tools, or collaborative group work. Keep the lessons varied and interesting to maintain student enthusiasm.
Creating a Positive Learning Environment: Foster a classroom culture of respect, open-mindedness, and intellectual curiosity, where students feel safe to express their ideas and engage in academic discourse.
