Job Description

  1. General Summary

     Under the consultative supervision of the Associate Chief of Proton Physics assists the Medical Physics team with routine quality assurance tasks. Performs patient specific plan verification measurements and/or calculations. Assist the Medical Physics team in daily monthly and annual quality assurance tests. Assists the Medical Physics team with the development of customized software tools. Assist the medical physics team with the administration of the radiation safety program. Under supervision performs routine medical physics task.

 

II.          Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

 

    1. Excellence in performing the tasks of a Health Physicist:
      1. Administers under supervision all aspects of the radiation safety program. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements that pertain to the radioactive materials license and the machine registrations that are issued by the State of Maryland.
      2. Performs radiation safety measurements performs administrative duties related to the radiation safety program advises the staff on radiation safety issues and performs radiation safety training for all staff.   
      3. Advises on all matters related to radiation safety.  Interacts with personnel of regulatory agencies during site visits and inspections.
      4. Evaluates and implements regulatory changes as mandated by federal state and local jurisdictions. Keeps up to date with recognized standards and codes.
      5. Assists with maintaining and amending radioactive materials license and radiation machine registrations. 
      6. Assist with receipt and proper disposal of radioactive material when needed.
      7. Keeps and maintains all radiations safety records for review by federal state and local regulators.  Prepares comprehensive reports which meet required standards of radiation safety.  Performs complex administrative duties.
      8. Active participation in Radiation Safety committee meetings. 
    2. Assists the Medical Physics staff.
      1. Assists with daily monthly and annual quality assurance measurements as it relates the proton treatment delivery system.
      2. Assists with patient specific quality assurance procedures to ensure safe delivery of radiation therapy.
      3. General assistance with Medical Physicist tasks.
    3. Education and Training
      1. Attends and participates in inservice and other relevant training courses for professional development.

Qualifications :

Education and Experience

 

  1. A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in health physics or closely related fields is required (Masters degree preferred).
  2. Three years experience as a Health Physicist in a hospital environment or equivalent applicable work experience is preferred.
  3. Certification by the American Board of Health Physics is preferred.

.IV.        Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    1. General knowledge of radiation physics.  Knowledge of best practices in Radiation Safety management.
    2.  Knowledge of health physics equipment such as survey meters various dosimeters. Understands the working principles of dose measurement instruments and detectors such as diodes ionization chambers TLDs and film dosimetry.
    3. Technical and organizational ability to assist the Radiation Safety Officer  in  overseeing and coordinating radiation safety program
    4. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required in order to work with staff faculty medical and nursing personnel. Ability to work with ionizing radiation requiring observance of radiation safety procedures.
