Job Description

Accountabilities:

  • Performs and provides microscopic interpretation of gram stains TB stains and other differentiating stains
  • Operation and maintenance of the microbiology analyzers and equipment
  • Identifies interprets and reports significant findings from infection control surveillance swabs and clinical specimens
  • Knowledge and/or experience of blood cultures rapid diagnostic kits and PCR
  • Report significant findings and reportable diseases to the appropriate health care providers (e.g. physician infection control practitioners public health unit etc.)
  • Validation of inventory supplies and new products
  • Recognition isolation and identification of significant organisms;  performs sensitivity testing
  • Disposes of biohazard waste according to protocols
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications :

  • Medical laboratory technologist with CSMLS certification
  • Minimum two years recent experience in a hospital microbiology setting
  • Current registration with CMLTO in good standing
  • Ability to recognize microorganisms using colonial and cellular morphology (gram stains)
  • Distinguish colours and recognize smells pertinent to organism identification
  • Familiar with serological and biochemical reactions that aid in identification of microorganisms
  • Working knowledge of specimen setup protocols and processing in microbiology
  • Must be authorized to practice in the CMLTO specialty microbiology 
  • Strong multitasking critical thinking and problemsolving skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills
  • Must demonstrate Oslers Values of Respect Excellence Service Compassion Innovation and Collaboration
  • Excellent attendance punctuality and work ethic
  • May be required to travel between and work at all Osler sites

Hours: Currently Days/Evenings/Nights including weekends and statutory holidays (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
