Job Description

We are seeking a Laboratory Safety Specialist for a contract position with the CDC in Atlanta GA. The individual will support scientists and other lab professionals and will serve as primary point of contact for safetyrelated incident and emergency event responses. The person will perform the duties outlined below:

  • Maintain laboratory safety documentation
  • Work with lab staff to draft and review new and existing risk assessments
  • Prepare and edit laboratory protocols as they pertain to safety
  • Work with lab staff to prepare documents for safety audits
  • Maintain safety training records for the branch lab staff
  • Prepare annual laboratory trainings and safety drills
  • Maintain safety standards of the lab that includes Chemical hygiene plan hazardous chemical use of material data sheets to determine the toxic flammable and other hazardous materials properties of chemicals and storage and labeling of chemicals.
  • Update and maintain needed safety lab signage
  • Respond to investigate and assess safety related incidents and near misses
  • Attend and participate in Agency/Center/Division safety meetings as needed and provide summaries of communications to all lab teams
  • Serve as primary point of contact for safetyrelated incidents and emergency event response. Ensure proper and timely notification of highrisk safety events to required personnel
  • Remain up to date on all safetyrelated trainings vaccinations policies and other requirements to effectively serve the laboratories
  • Provide consultation for safe work practices workflow and equipment use as needed/requested
  • Effectively communicate safetyrelated information to and from the laboratories in a timely manner


Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor s degree in microbiology biology chemistry or other related science field
  • Minimum of 12 years experience in performing duties outlined above.
  • Requires experience with the flowing:
  • Experience observing and working with good laboratory practice protocols.
  • Knowledge of biosafety requirements for research being performed.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Access Excel and PowerPoint
  • Desirable Skills:
    • Previous experience working in a CLIA environment.
    • Experience writing project and scientific reports.
    • Good oral and written communications skills.
    • Strong ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to analyze and pay attention to detail.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written technical and nontechnical information.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory records and files.


This is a full time / 40 hours per week position. The individual will be working onsite each day in the beginning and will be able to telework up to 2 days in the future. This position offers the accrual of paid time off paid federal holidays and is eligible to enroll in our health benefits program.
