General Summary
Responsible for the calculation preparation labeling storage and delivery of all feedings in the NICU PICU and Pediatric units. Under direct supervision performs a variety of tasks that relate to the preparation and delivery of pediatric formulas and transfer of information concerning patient formula orders. The formula room technician lead must adhere to all food safety and sanitation regulations and standards established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics set forth in Infant Feedings: Guidelines for preparation of Human Milk and Formula in Health Care Facilities . The formula room tech lead verifies shipments of supplies against invoices maintains par levels of formula and communicates shortages stores shipments received while maintaining cleanliness of the formula room and storage areas. Performs required quality improvement monitoring activities and is responsible for training all new formula room technician hires.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

- Prepares portions delivers patient formulas per recipe or RD instruction.
- Maintains patient formula orders via computer system and accurately prepares formula
- orders which are not available as ready to feed.
- Transcribes formula order information to prepared formula labels.
- Reports discrepancies in formula orders to manager or service RD. Informs service RD regarding unclear patient formula orders.
- Monitors and maintains an adequate inventory of Formula Room and Main Kitchen pediatric formula supplies daily. Notifies manager when supply pars are low and when increased usage above par levels is observed.
- Unpacks labels and stores formula & supplies in their designated area. Rotates supplies using FIFO (first in first out).
- Covers labels and dates formula requiring refrigeration according to formula room policy.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work space ensuring that department standards are met and that all sanitary activities are conducted in accordance with federal state and local health regulations.
- Answers all requests and administers formula to meet requirements in a timely fashion. Tracks formula to insure safe food service guidelines with dates/labels temperature controls.
- Trains new hires in preparation delivery and sanitary practices in formula room.
Qualifications :
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Two years experience preparing infant formula or Dietetic Technician experience in hospital setting.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with different infant formulas preferred.
- Ability to use computer system to manage patient information.
- Competent in mathematical skills to calculate and convert measurements for recipes (weights and measure in metric units ratios and percentages)
- Knowledge of common medical abbreviations and terminology
- Effective verbal/written skills are needed to communicate with dietitians the healthcare team and patients.
- Effective communication skills including email communications.
- Proven ability to adhere to protocols prioritize tasks apply critical thinking and problem solve.
