The Office of External Affairs manages many of the agencys most critical interactions with the public from raising awareness and promoting healthy behaviors to advancing policies and responding to health emergencies. The Bureau of Communications housed within the Office of External Affairs develops culturally responsive public health marketing campaigns; generates and crafts materials to inform New Yorkers of health information and program services ensuring accessibility for all; provides access to translation services for collateral materials and clinics; maintains the agencys website; and publishes content on the agencys social media platforms. Within Creative Communications the Design group oversees the artwork design layout and creation of print and digital media to inform New Yorkers of key health topics and emergency situations.
We are seeking to hire an Assistant Art Director. Reporting to the Director of Design the Assistant Art Director works closely with the Director to implement visual concepts and designs for programspecific and/or Health Departmentwide creative projects in collaboration with the larger Creative Communications team.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:
Assist Director in overseeing the look and feel of design projects and requests. Monitors project deliverables and timelines and takes corrective action as needed.
Advance the Health Departments mission and strategic plan generating attentiongrabbing accessible and highquality designs.
Design content for print social media and web with firm attention to typography composition and message hierarchy.
Analyze and transform health data into easytounderstand and compelling content with illustrations infographics charts and graphs.
Research and develop design best practices including those related to accessibility and data visualization.
Ensure that all publications meet standards of design excellence and adhere to agency brand and guidelines.
Directly supervise three graphic designers. Provide strategic guidance creative direction and handson support to team members in execution of assigned projects and technical aspects of designed print social media and web materials.
Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Creative Communications team (Health Media and Marketing Digital Communications Language Services and Content) as projects call for interaction and support. Work closely with the Digital Communications team to develop and maintain graphics for the Health Departments website and social media pages.
Liaise with Health Department divisions and bureaus and effectively foster relationships throughout the Health Department community with a diverse range of stakeholders to improve collaboration.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
Bachelors degree in graphic design marketing communications or related field.
At least five (5) years of experience in graphic design particularly with print and including some experience with data visualization.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign Illustrator Photoshop Premiere Pro and Rush preferred).
Ability to handle multiple deadlines in a fastpaced environment while collaborating with multiple stakeholders.
Experience reviewing and marking up PDFs using the Comment Tools function
Familiarity with accessibility design
Demonstrates knowledge of graphic design photography videography web design and strategic creative and critical thinking
Ability to communicate complex messages through clear and simple design to highly diverse New York City audiences.
Selfmotivated with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects tasks and timelines.
Demonstrates a professional courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with colleagues direct reports leadership and stakeholders.
Ability to supervise delegate and provide consultation and technical assistance to individual program components on media communications.

Qualifications :
(1) A baccalaureate degree with a major in fine or graphic arts from an accredited college and one year of fulltime paid experience as a commercial or graphic artist; or
(2) A fouryear high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus two years of training in a technical school approved by a states Department of Education or comparable governmental agency in oils water colors painting design black and white layout computer graphics and other art media and three years of acceptable fulltime paid experience as a commercial or graphic artist.
To be qualified for assignment to Assignment Level II individuals must have:
(a) at least one year of experience as a Graphic Artist Assignment Level I; or
(b) the Qualification Requirements described in 1 or 2 above plus two additional years of acceptable specialized paid experience conceptualizing and initiating graphic art projects.
