Overview
The Academic Counsellor plays a pivotal role in providing guidance and support to students facilitating their academic and personal development. This position is essential for ensuring that students successfully navigate their educational journey and make wellinformed decisions about their academic and career paths. The Academic Counsellor works closely with students faculty and other stakeholders to create a supportive and empowering environment for academic success.
Key responsibilities
- Provide academic counselling and guidance to students on course selection academic planning and career goal setting
- Assist students in understanding academic requirements policies and procedures
- Offer support to students experiencing academic challenges and develop intervention strategies to enhance student success
- Organize and conduct workshops seminars and orientations on academic skills time management and stress management
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and address student academic issues and concerns
- Monitor student academic progress and provide timely interventions as needed
- Develop and maintain student academic records and document counselling sessions
- Participate in student recruitment and orientation activities
- Stay abreast of educational trends career opportunities and academic programs to provide uptodate information to students
- Assist in the development of academic support programs and resources for students
Required qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Counseling Education Psychology or related field
- Proven experience in academic counselling or related student support roles
- Excellent knowledge of academic advising principles career development and higher education regulations
- Strong understanding of student development theory and counseling techniques
- Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written
- Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations and demonstrate cultural competence
- Proficiency in using educational and counselling software and tools
- High level of empathy patience and confidentiality in dealing with student concerns
- Ability to collaborate with faculty staff and external organizations to support student success
