Overview:
An Alignment and Brakes Technician specializes in inspecting diagnosing repairing and maintaining the alignment and braking systems of vehicles. The technician works primarily on suspension systems wheel alignment brake systems (including pads rotors callipers and hydraulic components) and related components. They are responsible for ensuring that vehicles are aligned correctly and that braking systems are functioning safely contributing to vehicle safety and performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Wheel Alignment:
- Perform 2wheel and 4wheel alignments to ensure proper vehicle handling tire wear and vehicle stability.
- Use computerized alignment equipment to measure angles and adjust suspension components.
- Inspect and repair suspension components such as struts shocks tie rods and control arms.
- Identify and address issues that may affect vehicle alignment such as worn tires or damaged parts.
Brake System Repair and Maintenance:
- Inspect diagnose and repair all aspects of the brake system including brake pads rotors drums calipers and master cylinders.
- Perform brake fluid flushes and replace brake fluid when necessary.
- Test and adjust brake systems to ensure optimal performance and safety.
- Replace worn or damaged components and ensure proper installation of parts.
Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
- Diagnose and troubleshoot issues with wheel alignment and braking systems identifying worn or damaged parts and recommending repairs or replacements.
- Address issues like uneven tire wear pulling to one side or brake noise.
Vehicle Inspections:
- Perform comprehensive vehicle inspections related to wheel alignment and braking systems.
- Provide customers with reports of inspections and offer recommendations for any necessary repairs or replacements.
Safety and Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all alignment and brake repairs are completed in compliance with safety regulations and manufacturer specifications.
- Conduct final safety checks on all repair work confirming that the vehicle meets operational standards before it is returned to the customer.
Customer Interaction and Service:
- Communicate with customers regarding vehicle issues repair options and cost estimates.
- Provide highquality customer service explaining services performed and offering advice on maintenance needs.
Documentation and RecordKeeping:
- Maintain detailed records of all services performed including parts used and labour hours.
- Update and maintain vehicle service histories accurately.
Required Skills and amp; Qualifications:
Education and amp; Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent: Required; additional vocational training or certification in automotive technology alignment or brake systems is a plus.
- Certification: ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification in steering and suspension or brakes is highly preferred.
- Experience: Prior experience (typically 13 years) working as an alignment and brakes technician or in a related automotive repair field.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of wheel alignment systems brake components and suspension systems.
- Experience using alignment machines and diagnostic tools.
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing brake systems including hydraulic and electronic components.
- Ability to use hand tools power tools and lift equipment safely.
ProblemSolving and amp; Troubleshooting:
- Strong ability to diagnose alignment issues brake malfunctions and suspension problems.
- Skilled at troubleshooting complex vehicle handling or braking concerns and developing effective solutions.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment or parts (up to 50 lbs. or more).
- Comfortable working in a garage or workshop environment exposed to dust dirt and noise.
- Manual dexterity to operate tools and work on vehicle components.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Strong communication skills to explain issues repairs and recommendations to customers in a clear and professional manner.
- Excellent customer service skills with a focus on providing solutions and ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- ASE Certification in brakes and/or steering and suspension systems.
- Knowledge of advanced diagnostic tools and alignment software.
- Experience with electric or hybrid vehicles and their specific alignment and braking requirements.
Work Environment:
- Work in a shop or garage environment with exposure to typical vehicle maintenance equipment.
- The role requires both standing and bending for extended periods while working on vehicles.
- May require flexible hours or oncall availability based on the shops operating hours or customer needs.
