Roles and responsibilities
1. Processing Transactions
- Accurately scan and ring up customer purchases using a cash register or point-of-sale (POS) system.
- Calculate and give change for cash transactions.
- Handle various forms of payment, including cash, credit/debit cards, gift cards, and mobile payments.
- Issue receipts and process refunds, exchanges, or returns as per store policy.
2. Customer Service
- Greet customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Address customer questions, concerns, and complaints effectively, providing information about products or store policies.
- Offer assistance to customers in finding items or answering inquiries about products.
- Maintain a positive, helpful, and approachable attitude toward customers at all times.
3. Maintaining the Checkout Area
- Keep the cashier station clean, organized, and stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., receipt paper, bags, change).
- Ensure that the area is free of clutter and that all items are properly organized.
- Replenish cash registers with the appropriate amount of cash at the beginning and end of shifts.
- Ensure that the POS system and other equipment are functioning properly; report any issues to management.
4. Balancing the Cash Drawer
- Count the cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure that the amount of money in the register matches the sales recorded.
- Prepare cash deposits at the end of the shift or workday, ensuring accuracy and security.
- Report any discrepancies in cash or sales transactions to a supervisor.
5. Handling Special Transactions
- Process gift card purchases and redemptions, coupons, and loyalty program discounts.
- Manage the sale of age-restricted items, such as alcohol or tobacco, ensuring proper ID verification.
- Follow store policies when processing returns or exchanges, checking for proof of purchase or approval from management.
6. Assisting with Inventory
- Assist in maintaining stock levels at the register and front of the store, ensuring shelves and displays are stocked neatly.
- Alert management or supervisors if an item is running low or out of stock.
- Occasionally assist with inventory checks or the restocking of products.
7. Security and Fraud Prevention
- Monitor for fraudulent activities, such as counterfeit money or credit card fraud.
- Maintain vigilance in spotting suspicious behavior or potential theft.
- Ensure that all security procedures are followed, including checking receipts for high-value items or security tags.
