Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

1. Customer Service:

  • Greeting Customers: Welcome customers as they approach the checkout counter with a friendly and professional demeanor. Make customers feel comfortable and assist them throughout the transaction.
  • Answering Questions: Assist customers with product inquiries, price checks, and information about promotions or store policies. Address customer concerns or complaints in a polite and helpful manner.
  • Provide Information: Inform customers about store promotions, discounts, or loyalty programs, and encourage them to take advantage of current offers.
  • Upselling or Cross-Selling: In some cases, cashiers may be encouraged to promote additional items or services, such as upselling products or offering a loyalty card.

2. Transaction Processing:

  • Handling Payments: Process customer payments accurately using various methods such as cash, credit/debit cards, mobile payments, or checks. Ensure that change is given correctly when necessary.
  • Scanning Items: Scan items quickly and efficiently using a barcode scanner. Ensure that all items are properly recorded and any discounts or promotions are applied correctly.
  • Processing Returns and Exchanges: Handle customer returns, exchanges, or refunds according to store policies. Ensure the appropriate procedures are followed for processing returned merchandise, issuing refunds, or providing store credit.
  • Gift Cards and Coupons: Process the redemption of gift cards, store coupons, and digital coupons. Ensure that the discounts or values are applied correctly to the transaction.
  • Ensure Accurate Pricing: Verify prices on items and ensure that the correct price is charged to the customer, especially if there are price tags, sale signs, or promotions.

3. Cash Management:

  • Cash Handling: Accurately handle cash, ensuring that bills and coins are counted correctly. Ensure that the cash drawer is balanced at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Cash Register Maintenance: Ensure the cash register or point-of-sale (POS) system is functioning correctly. Report any issues with the system to the supervisor or IT team for troubleshooting.
  • End-of-Day Balancing: At the end of the shift, balance the register by counting cash and verifying that it matches the sales recorded in the system. Prepare and hand over the cash to the designated supervisor or manager.

  • Customer Service Skills: Ability to interact with customers politely and professionally, ensuring a positive shopping experience.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail to accurately process payments, scan items, and manage cash handling.
  • Math Skills: Basic math skills for counting change, processing payments, and managing cash registers.
  • Communication Skills: Clear communication is essential for interacting with customers, explaining store policies, and handling any inquiries or issues.
  • Time Management: Ability to manage time effectively, ensuring quick and efficient transactions, especially during busy periods.
  • Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems and other digital tools used in the transaction process.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to address customer concerns or issues related to transactions, returns, or pricing discrepancies.
  • Integrity and Trustworthiness: High level of integrity, especially when handling cash and sensitive customer information. A cashier must ensure all transactions are handled honestly and securely.
