The Lecturer in Chemistry will focus on delivering high-quality teaching in the College of General Education curriculum and fostering a positive learning environment to support all academic programs of UDST. The role involves teaching undergraduate first-year courses, curriculum development, and supporting students in their academic progress without the requirement to conduct independent academic research. Courses include—but are not limited to— General Chemistry I & II, Health Sciences Chemistry, and Applied Science.
Comprehensive knowledge in chemistry fundamentals, including general chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, biochemistry, and possibly materials science or environmental chemistry.
Ability to teach and explain complex concepts such as chemical bonding, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, kinetics, spectroscopy, and laboratory techniques in an accessible and engaging way.
Up-to-date knowledge of current trends in chemistry, including new research, technological advancements, and teaching methodologies.
Teaching & Pedagogical Skills:
Strong ability to design and deliver lectures, tutorials, and laboratory sessions for undergraduate or graduate students, creating an interactive and student-centered learning environment.
Proficiency in active learning techniques, such as group work, problem-solving, and case studies, to engage students and promote critical thinking.
Experience with curriculum development, including designing course syllabi, preparing lesson plans, and creating instructional materials such as presentations, handouts, and quizzes.
Familiarity with blended and online learning environments (e.g., using learning management systems such as Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas), incorporating digital tools and virtual labs to enhance the learning experience.
Experience using assessment methods such as exams, quizzes, lab reports, presentations, and group projects to evaluate student learning and provide feedback.
Experience teaching chemistry at the university or college level, either as a teaching assistant, lecturer, or in a similar academic role. Experience with course delivery in areas such as general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry is highly preferred.
Experience mentoring or advising undergraduate students, guiding them in their academic progress, research projects, and career development.
Communication Skills:
Excellent oral and written communication skills to convey complex scientific concepts clearly and effectively to students.
Ability to engage students through dynamic, clear, and accessible lectures and lab sessions that foster an environment of inquiry and exploration.
Skilled in providing constructive feedback on assignments, exams, and lab reports to help students improve their academic performance.
Organization & Time Management:
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple classes, grading, office hours, and research projects (if applicable).
Ability to balance teaching duties with student advising, administrative tasks, and, if applicable, research responsibilities.
Adaptability & Innovation:
Open to using new technologies and teaching methods to enhance student learning and engagement, such as incorporating virtual labs, interactive simulations, or online resources.
Willingness to adapt teaching approaches based on student feedback and evolving educational needs.
Collaboration & Teamwork:
Ability to work collaboratively with other faculty members in the chemistry department and across disciplines to improve the curriculum, organize events, and support institutional goals.
Willingness to contribute to departmental or university-wide initiatives, such as student clubs, chemistry outreach programs, or curriculum reviews.
