Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Perform Project technical tasks assigned by the Instrumentation Discipline Lead consisting in design, checking, validation, testing and engineering of Control Systems and Telecommunication Systems
  • Interface and coordinate with the other Project Team Specialists and Designers
  • Coordinate technical activities performed either by insourcing either by outsourcing

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare Control Systems quantities for cost and erection works estimates
  • Support Discipline Lead to define man hours and cost estimates
  • Review Client technical documentation and requirements
  • Coordinate subcontracted engineering activities and control subcontracted engineering documents
  • Define engineering design basis and guidelines
  • Prepare the technical documentation for Control Systems material and services requisitions and prepare, according to internal procedures, the technical evaluations
  • Provide technical support to Project Team
  • Optimise Control, Safety Systems design ensuring minimal cost and complexity in compliance with the contractual and safety requirements
  • Prepare Control and Safety Systems supply specifications
  • Prepare Advanced Control, Dynamic Simulation and Operator Training Simulator functional and supply specifications
  • Participate to P and ID mechanization
  • Validate Vendor Control and Safety Systems functional design specifications and participate to detail configuration documents definition
  • Validate Vendor Control Systems BOQs
  • 1. Technical Leadership and Strategy:

  • Lead Complex Projects: Take the lead in high-level, complex engineering projects, ensuring that technical specifications, design processes, and timelines align with the project goals and business objectives.
  • Define Engineering Solutions: Provide expert-level input into the design, development, and implementation of engineering solutions, ensuring they meet the highest standards of quality, reliability, and performance.
  • Set Technical Direction: Drive innovation and technical excellence within the engineering department by establishing best practices, methodologies, and standards for engineering design and execution.
  • Long-Term Engineering Strategy: Contribute to the formulation of long-term engineering strategies, collaborating with senior management and other departments to align technical goals with the organization’s business goals.
  • 2. Project Management and Coordination:

  • Oversee Project Execution: Manage and oversee the execution of engineering projects, ensuring that deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, product managers, architects, and other teams to ensure that project goals are clearly defined, risks are mitigated, and resources are efficiently allocated.
  • Risk Management: Identify potential risks associated with the engineering project, whether technical, financial, or resource-related, and develop mitigation plans to address these risks.

Desired candidate profile

  • Deep Technical Expertise: Extensive knowledge in a specific engineering discipline (mechanical, civil, electrical, chemical, software, etc.). Ability to apply advanced principles and theories to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Leadership and Mentoring: Ability to lead a team of engineers, offering technical guidance, mentorship, and fostering an environment that supports innovation and continuous learning.
  • Project Management: Strong organizational and project management skills to handle large-scale engineering projects, managing timelines, resources, risks, and budgets.
  • Problem-Solving and Innovation: A critical thinker who can tackle complex engineering challenges, finding creative solutions that meet business goals and technical requirements.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, including management, clients, and vendors.
  • Risk Management: Ability to assess, mitigate, and manage risks associated with engineering projects, ensuring that potential issues are identified and addressed proactively.
  • Industry Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of industry standards, regulations, and the latest technological trends in the engineering sector.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision and attention to detail in both design and execution, ensuring high-quality outcomes for engineering projects.

Tools & Technologies:

  • Engineering Software: Tools specific to the engineer’s discipline, such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, SolidWorks, ANSYS, or CATIA for design and simulation.
  • Project Management Tools: Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or Trello to manage project timelines, resources, and budgets.
  • Collaboration Platforms: Tools like Jira, Confluence, or Slack to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and manage engineering workflows.
  • Version Control & PLM Systems: Knowledge of systems like Git (for software engineers) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems such as Windchill for managing product designs and development processes.

Work Environments:

  • Corporate Engineering Offices: Senior Principal Engineers often work in engineering departments within large corporations, leading teams of engineers and managing projects across various industries.
  • Construction Sites: In civil, mechanical, or infrastructure engineering, they may spend significant time on-site, overseeing project implementation, interacting with contractors, and solving on-the-ground engineering challenges.
  • R&D Labs: In research-focused industries (e.g., automotive, aerospace, energy), Senior Principal Engineers may work in R&D environments, where they lead innovation and the development of next-generation products or systems.
  • Manufacturing Plants: They may also work in manufacturing settings, focusing on process improvements, design for manufacturability, and equipment development.
