Job Description

Labor & Delivery nursing requires a high level of clinical skill compassion and resilience to provide excellent care to women and their families during one of the most significant moments in their lives. As a Labor & Delivery RN youll be at the forefront of maternal and newborn care providing support throughout the childbirth process. Your responsibilities will include monitoring maternal and fetal wellbeing assisting with labor management and pain relief techniques and facilitating safe deliveries. Youll collaborate closely with obstetricians and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes for both mother and baby; including emotional checks monitoring mother baby bonding and recording vital signs and any negative reactions to medications. Additionally youll play a crucial role in educating and empowering women and their families promoting informed decision making and providing a positive childbirth experience.

This position collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to ensure patient care plans are implemented and monitored for effectiveness.

This position requires 12hr shifts from 7AM730PM 11AM11P or 7PM730AM.

Job Requirements:

Conduct thorough assessments of maternal and fetal well being before during and after labor. Including monitoring vital signs fetal heart rate uterine contractions and progress of labor

Provide emotional support encouragement and comfort measures to laboring mothers assisting them in coping with pain and anxiety through various relaxation and breathing techniques.

Assist obstetricians or midwives in managing labor which may involve administering medications monitoring epidurals and providing guidance on pushing techniques.

Assist during child birth procedures including vaginal deliveries cesarean sections and instrumental deliveries ensuring a safe and supportive environment for mother and baby.

Provide immediate care to the newborn including assessment of Apgar scores drying and stimulation cord clamping and cutting and initiating skin to skin contact and breastfeeding as appropriate

Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric emergencies such as umbilical cord prolapse fetal distress maternal hemorrhage or shoulder dystocia implementing appropriate interventions and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal outcomes.

Educate expectant mothers and their families about the childbirth process pain management options breastfeeding techniques newborn care postpartum recovery and signs of complications empowering them to make informed decisions and participate actively in their care.

Serve as an advocate for patients and their families ensuring their needs and preferences are respected and addressed throughout the childbirth experience.

Stay updated on current practices guidelines and technologies in obstetric nursing through continuing education professional development activities and participation in relevant conferences or seminars.

Maintain accurate and thorough medical records documenting assessments interventions medications and patient responses in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.

The ability to quickly assess and respond to changes in maternal or fetal status anticipate potential complications and implement appropriate interventions is essential for ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient outcomes safety and satisfaction within the labor and delivery unit.

Collaborate closely with obstetricians midwives anesthesiologists neonatologists pediatricians and other healthcare team members to coordinate care communicate patient status and ensure a multidisciplinary approach to maternal and neonatal health.

Qualifications:

Associate degree from a professional nursing program (required)

BSN or current enrollment in a BSN program at an accredited school of Nursing (preferred)

Current Registered Nurse License in this state (Illinois)

BLS and ACLS (required)

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) (preferred)

Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) (preferred)

23 year of Labor & Delivery Experience (required)

Able to work various hours as needed.
