Job Overview:
The Electrical Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for electrical projects. This role involves analyzing project specifications blueprints and proposals to determine the labor material and time required to complete the project. The Electrical Estimator works closely with project managers engineers and clients to ensure estimates are comprehensive and aligned with project goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Analysis:
- Review and interpret electrical blueprints technical specifications and project documents to understand project scope and requirements.
- Analyze requests for proposals (RFPs) invitations to bid and other project documentation to gather necessary information.
- Conduct site visits (if necessary) to evaluate project conditions and requirements.
- Estimating Process:
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates including labor materials equipment subcontractor costs and other expenses.
- Calculate project timeframes factoring in variables like labor hours supply chains and equipment availability.
- Use estimating software and tools to generate estimates and maintain uptodate databases of pricing labor rates and material costs.
- Vendor and Subcontractor Coordination:
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and coverage of all project aspects.
- Maintain relationships with vendors to stay updated on pricing trends and product availability.
- Bid Submission:
- Prepare and submit bid packages in accordance with project deadlines including comprehensive breakdowns of costs and timelines.
- Communicate and clarify any ambiguities with the client or general contractor regarding the estimate.
- Provide recommendations for value engineering or costsaving measures where applicable.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with project managers engineers and clients to ensure that estimates align with project requirements.
- Collaborate with internal teams (e.g. procurement construction management) to ensure that all project aspects are included in the estimate.
- Cost Monitoring & Reporting:
- Update estimates as project designs evolve and adjust pricing for scope changes.
- Track project costs throughout the lifecycle of the project to provide feedback on estimating accuracy for future bids.
- Prepare and present detailed cost analysis and reports to senior management.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in electrical estimating project management or related field.
- Proven experience estimating electrical work in commercial industrial or residential construction sectors.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Thorough understanding of electrical systems components codes and construction practices.
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g. Accubid ConEst Trimble) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word).
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills for accurate cost calculation.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints electrical schematics and other technical drawings.
- Attention to Detail:
- Exceptional attention to detail to ensure estimates are thorough and complete.
- Ability to identify potential risks or missing items in the scope of work.
- Communication:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with internal teams clients and subcontractors.
- Ability to clearly explain estimates and cost structures to clients and project stakeholders.
- Time Management:
- Strong organizational and time management skills to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor s degree in electrical engineering construction management or a related field preferred.
- Certification as a Professional Estimator (e.g. through ASPE or AACE International) is a plus.
- Knowledge of local electrical codes and regulations.
