Job description:
- The purpose of this role is to perform Spanish translation and interpretation services for the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and any requests on behalf of the agency.
Background:
- The Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) mission is to promote protect and improve the health and safety of all Hoosiers.
- The Maternal and Child Health Divisions (MCH) Translation and Interpretations services team serves to connect families organizations and providers locally and statewide.
- This mission is accomplished by building and strengthening systems that serve Hoosiers throughout their lifespan.
- The position represents IDOH/MCH to numerous internal and external partners statewide and advises the Community Outreach and Education Supervisor on matters of major impact to ensure conformity with agency state and federal requirements.
Purpose of Position/Summary:
- The purpose of this role is to perform Spanish translation and interpretation services for the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) and any requests on behalf of the agency and to promote IDOH projects and programs through translation and interpretation efforts.
- Specifically this position will focus on facilitating communication between individuals who do not speak the same language possible.
- Translating and Interpreting helps to break the language barrier to support public services for those who need them.
- Finally this role will serve as a liaison between the IDOH and families whose primary language is Spanish.
- The Spanish Medical Translator will ensure that translations are identical to the original material as possible by accurately translating the tone context and sentence flow without losing any of the meaning.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Translator/Interpreter Translate and Interpret for multiple divisions/agencies internal or external.
- Translator/Interpreter Meet IDOH and MCH standards to exceed needs in customer service and interpreting skills.
- Translator/Interpreter Maintain professionalism.
- Translator/Interpreter Advocate for LEP clients when necessary.
- Translator/Interpreter Maintain strict confidentiality of translations and interpretations.
- Translator/Interpreter Maintain a flexible daily schedule and be available during nontraditional work hours and days.
- Translator/Interpreter Communicate effectively with requestors and staff to ensure all needs are met.
- Translator/Interpreter Participate in other opportunities applicable to support translation and interpretation efforts.
- Translator/Interpreter Attend meetings conferences or events if needed to support our department.
- Translator Reads or listens to material in original language determines the understanding of the meaning and context of that material and converts it into a second language making sure to preserve the original meaning.
- Translator Proofread translations.
- Translator Complete translation requests from different programs in the IDOH agency. Requests include brochures flyers program literature articles authorizations forms consent forms legal documents provider and client letters and direct requests from the State Health Commissioners office.
- Translator Relay concepts and ideas between languages.
- Translator Use special dictionaries glossaries and websites for reference. Research as necessary to understand all terminology.
- Translator Use appropriate software for delivery and presentation.
- Translator Consult with experts in specialized areas.
- Interpreter Assist the front desk with interpretation requests for visitors.
- Interpreter Lead three way calls for any staff in MCH division and/or ISDH.
- Interpreter Attend community events to provide interpretation services as well as necessary document translation and sight translations.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelors degree or a minimum of 3 years of experience translating.
- Completion of 40hour Medical Interpreting Training such as Bridging the Gap.
- ATA Certification preferred.
- CMI or CCHI Certification preferred.
- Native Spanish speaker level.
- Native Spanish grammar level. Must be able to navigate almost any document in both languages English and Spanish. Must be able to communicate in both languages spontaneously. Be capable of writing without any errors.
- Fluent in English and Spanish.
- Able to communicate professionally verbally and in writing.
- Industry specific knowledge.
- Demonstrate Interpreting/Translating abilities.
- Culturally Competent.
- Strong communication skills.
- High level of discretion and confidentiality.
- Must be able to work with limited supervision.
- Must be able to interpret/translate assignments without bias.
- Strong stress management.
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
- Capable of reading long documents with attention to detail in order to provide accurate proofreadings.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to convey information effectively to both professionals and the public.
- Must complete a proficiency test to determine the language proficiency in knowledge of grammar vocabulary and syntax among other things.
- Comprehension and domain of vocabulary in distinct registers including jargon and acronyms. Must be familiar with idiomatic expressions and slangs.
- Skills in using Microsoft Office.
- Exemplary customer service skills.
- Ability to work as a team member and take direction as well as the ability to take responsibility and make decisions.
- Excellent office skills and computer knowledge.
- Ability to comprehend oral and written directions express ideas clearly and convey information.
- Able to handle multiple tasks and projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
- The Spanish Medical Translator/Interpreter works with both IDOH staff and contractors to ensure compliance with all systems requirements.
- The position represents IDOH/MCH to numerous internal and external partners statewide and advises the Community Engagement and Systems Building Director on matters of major impact to ensure conformity with agency state and federal requirements as well as continuous support to the Hispanic Community statewide.
Personal Work Relationships:
- The Medical Spanish Translator/Interpreter maintains cooperative relationships with internal and external partners for daily problem solving and interpretation of regulations and policies; and must have the ability to work with a diverse group of employees not only in function but also in skill level.
Difficulty of work:
- The position requires major attention to detail and language understanding. This individual will be working with tight deadlines and must maintain great communication amongst other translators to meet these deadlines.
