Job Description: Director of Nursing Services

Overview: Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer the Director of Nursing Services provides multidisciplinary leadership and administrative authority for multiple patient care units and departments on a 24hour basis. This role assumes accountability and responsibility for the management and development of programs within the service line and oversees the operations and results of each designated patient care unit or department. In the absence of the Chief Nursing Officer the Director will assume authority and responsibility for directing nursing department activities. The Director advocates for the protection and rights of individuals families communities healthcare providers and other professions with a focus on health and safety. The role adheres to the ANA Nursing Administration Scope and Standards of Practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Resource Utilization:

  • Integrate nursing competencies and processes into business decisions.
  • Manage and develop business plans and programs within the service line ensuring efficient operations and outcomes.
  • Optimize fiscal resource allocation to support current and potential objectives.
  • Promote the use of innovative applications and new technologies considering global environmental health and sustainability.
  • Educate others on the costs risks and benefits of plans and solutions.

Leadership:

  • Maintain a positive professional image of nursing and clinical services.
  • Recognize contributions of managers and staff providing educational and developmental opportunities.
  • Offer leadership direction and mentoring to managers to encourage goal achievement and professional growth.
  • Support strong nursing morale by creating an environment that fosters personal investment excellence and commitment to shared values.
  • Create and maintain a healthy work environment engaging as a team builder and serving as a change agent.
  • Provide timely constructive feedback to managers to aid their development.
  • Promote the recruitment and retention of quality patient care staff and ensure annual performance evaluations are completed on time.
  • Encourage professional development and participation in professional organizations.

Financial Management and Resource Utilization:

  • Develop monitor and analyze labor operating and capital expense budgets ensuring appropriate resource allocation.
  • Consider safety effectiveness cost and impact on practice in planning and delivering nursing services.

Communication:

  • Apply broad knowledge and experience to address complex issues and make strategic decisions aligned with the mission vision and values of Mission Hospital.
  • Promote open communication throughout the organization encouraging the expression of ideas and opinions.
  • Deliver clear convincing and wellorganized presentations projecting credibility and poise.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information within and across departments.

Collaboration:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Nursing Officer to develop and implement policies and procedures that guide patient care services.
  • Manage the care delivery process for designated nursing units ensuring consistency with current nursing and clinical research and practice.
  • Partner with physicians to identify and meet patient needs and establish effective working relationships.
  • Establish service line goals that align with the hospitals mission and goals.

Quality and Performance Improvement:

  • Identify and evaluate opportunities for performance improvement and implement quality initiatives that improve care and performance.
  • Collect and analyze comprehensive data develop plans to achieve expected outcomes and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Enhance the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice services administration and service delivery.
  • Utilize creativity and innovation to improve care delivery and population outcomes.
  • Implement and evaluate quality improvement activities to initiate changes in nursing practice and the healthcare delivery system.
  • Ensure compliance with JCAHO Title 22 and other regulatory agencies.

Customer Satisfaction:

  • Develop strategies to achieve hospital goals for customer satisfaction in each patient care unit.

Ethics:

  • Demonstrate competencies aligned with the four core values foundational to all management activities.
  • Integrate ethical provisions into all areas of practice.
  • Certify systems and application access within the SJHS environment every 90 days for all direct reports.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree in Nursing or a Bachelors Degree in Nursing with a Masters Degree in a relevant field of management policy or administration.
  • California Registered Nurse License (Vendor Managed) upon hire.
  • 10 or more years of nursing experience with at least 3 years in nursing administration.
